CAF Awards Nigeria Super Eagles THREE points And THREE Goals Following Airport Incident, And Libya FINED $50,000.

Nigeria's Super Eagles have emerged winners of the AFCONQ2025 second-leg game against Libya after being held 20-hour hostage in airport.

Following Libya’s 1-0 loss to Nigeria in the first leg of the qualifiers in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Friday, October 11, both teams were expected to face off again in Benina, for their fourth Group D match.

The Super Eagles departed for Libya on Sunday afternoon October 13, but according to reports from the NFF camp, an hour before landing at Benghazi, their destination, the chartered Nigerian aircraft was diverted to Al Abraq, a city more than two hours’ drive from Benghazi.

The unexpected diversion left players and officials stranded without assistance from the Libyan Football Federation (LFF), which failed to provide transportation.

The pathetic condition of the Super Eagles players and the accompanying officials was brought to public attention by the team’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, via his X account which he tweeted. 

The Disciplinary Board of Confederation Of African Football (CAF) has awarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria, three points and three goals from the boycotted Matchday 4 encounter of the 2025 AFCON qualification series between Libya Vs Nigeria scheduled to be played in Benina on 15th October.

The Libya Football Federation has also been ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000, which is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision.
