Luka Modric Expresses Delight On His Contract Extension With Real Madrid Until June 2025.

Luka Modrić has agreed to extend his contract at Real Madrid by one-year which will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu until 30 June 2025.

Modrić arrived at Real Madrid in the super of 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur, and in his twelve seasons stay with the Spanish giants, he has become a club and world football legend.

The Croatian midfielder was out of contract at the end of the June but his continuing presence will ensure manager Carlo Ancelotti has experience to count on as he prepares for his 13th season at the Bernabeu.

He has won 26 titles with Los Blancos: 6 Champions Leagues, 5 Club World Cups, 4 European Super Cups, 4 Ligas, 2 Copas del Rey and 5 Spanish Super Cups. 

Modric is one of only five players to have won 6 European Cups and has the most titles in the history of the club.

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner has featured in 534 matches for Los Blancos, scoring 39 goals.

He played 46 times across all competitions, scoring two goals and six assists in 2023/24 season, with many coming from the bench, as he started on just 23 occasions.

The 38-year-old set to turn 39 in September, has taken a backseat at Madrid in recent seasons, due in part to the emergence of Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham. He started just 18 games as Real cruised to another LaLiga title last season.

Towards the end of the season, Modric said he would like to end his career at Madrid.

“I have always said that I would like to retire at Real Madrid,” he told Spanish radio COPE in May.

“It would be a dream to retire at home, at the club of my life, and I hope that happens. I have the physique and football to continue in the elite, I have no doubt.”

Modric’s long-time midfield partner Toni Kroos has already confirmed his retirement from football, with his final match coming for Germany in their 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

Following the announcement via the club's website on Wednesday, the new Real Madrid's captain expressed his delight on the contract extension, saying (as per Madrid Xtra) that he realised a dream when he first signed for Los Blancos.

“All my dreams came true when I signed for Real Madrid,” he said.

Internationally, Modric has played 178 matches for Croatia and holds the all-time record for international caps.

He started in all three of Croatia's matches at the just concluded Euro 2024, with his country going out in the group stage of the competition after finishing third in their group.

On an individual level, Modrić won the Ballon d'Or, the FIFA Player of the Year Award and was named UEFA Player of the Year in 2018. He has been part of the FIFA FIFPro World XI 6 times and has been voted the Champions League's Best Midfielder twice. 

He has won 1 Ballon d'Or and 1 Silver Ball at the Club World Cup. With the Croatian national team, he won the Golden Ball at the 2018 World Cup and the Bronze Ball at the 2022 World Cup.

Real have already completed the high profile signing of Kylian Mbappe from Paris St-Germain, with the France striker officially unveiled on Tuesday 16 July.

Teenager Endrick has also been drafted in from Brazilian side Palmeiras to bolster the 15-time European champions going into next season.
