“Giving up is something you will never hear from me.” Cristiano Ronaldo Reacts Following Portugal's Win Against Slovenia.

• Cristiano Ronaldo reacts to his penalty miss in extra-time of Portugal's round-of-16 game against Slovenia at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on Monday night.

• The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Ronaldo has now failed to score three of the nine penalties he has taken at major international tournaments.

• He currently holds the record as the player with the most goals (14) in the history of the European Championship.

Despite been in red-hot form prior to the competition, Ronaldo is yet to hit the ground running at the ongoing Euros, failing to score in the group stages of an international competition for the first time in his illustrious career.

The Al-Nassr forward experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as the Selecao qualified for the quarter-finals in dramatic fashion.

Following a tensed goalless encounter against a stubborn Slovenian side in 90 minutes full time, Ronaldo had a golden opportunity to put Portugal ahead late in the first half of extra-time but he couldn't break his goal-scoring drought.

Referee Daniele Orsato awarded Portugal a penalty after a foul on Diogo Jota in the box, the 39-year-old stepped up to take the resulting crucial spot kick, but his effort was superbly saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

After scoring his previous 29 penalties, Ronaldo was visibly stunned to see Atletico Madrid's shot-stopper Oblak keep out his shot.

The missed opportunity left Ronaldo visibly distraught, and he appeared to be on the verge of tears following the incident.

Seconds later the whistle went for half-time in extra-time and that was the signal for Ronaldo to start openly weeping as he stood in a huddle of Portugal players.

He was consoled by his teammates, and was able to wipe away his tears and continue playing when the match resumed.

The missed penalty deeply affected not only the Al-Nassr star, but also his mother, Dolores Aveiro who was in attendance at the stadium.

Dolores Aveiro, a steadfast supporter throughout her son's illustrious career, was visibly heartbroken and unable to contain her emotions.

Portugal fans sang “Viva Ronaldo” after his emotional outburst was shown on the big screen in the Frankfurt Arena.

The match ultimately went to penalty shootout, and the five-time Ballon d'Or winner made up for his miss as he was the first player to convert his spot kick for Portugal.

Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva successfully converted their penalties, while Slovenia's three attempts were missed 

It was Portugal's goalkeeper Diogo Costa who emerged hero on the night as he made three crucial penalty saves from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec, and Benjamin Verbic to secure a 3-0 victory against the lowly-ranked Slovenia.

Ronaldo speaking after the game said: “As you saw, I missed the penalty but I also wanted to be the first to score, you have to take responsibility when the team should.

“You can't be afraid, I've never been afraid to face things head on, sometimes I get it right, sometimes I don't get it right, but giving up is something you'll never hear from my name.

“I was sorry for the fans. I'll always give my best for this shirt, whether I miss it or not. And I'll do this my whole life. You have to take responsibility.”

The dramatic win sees the Selecao set up a mouth-watering clash against the former World champions France in the quarter-finals on Friday evening (5pm).

Les Bleus had defeated Belgium 1-0 in the earlier game on Monday, July 1, 2024. Second-half substitute Randal Kolo-Muani forced Jan Vertonghen into scoring an own goal with five minutes remaining.

Speaking in a post-match interview on the blockbuster encounter against France, Ronaldo said; "We are going to have a difficult game against France, and we are going to war. It was a plus of energy and I will always do my best with this shirt.

"I'm going to do this my whole life. I've never been afraid to face things head on and giving up is something you'll never hear from me." 

He also added that he is making his final appearance at the Euros and will be hoping to crown it with success.; “This will be my last EUROs, of course.

“But I’m not moved by this, I’m moved by enthusiasm."
