Bayer Leverkusen makes history by becoming the first team to finish the 2023/24 Bundesliga season unbeaten as they defeat Augsburg 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

With five games to spare, Leverkusen had already confirmed their inevitable status as champions on Matchday 29, April 24, following a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen courtesy of a sensational hattrick from Florian Wirtz, Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka on the day.

The final league match of the season against Augsburg was always set to be a joyous occasion for Xabi Alonso's men in front of their home fans, and they did not disappoint.

Nigeria's Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface gave the hosts the lead 12 minutes into the encounter, which they doubled fifteen minutes later when Robert Andrich scored.

Mert Komur gave Augsburg a small chance to retaliate in the 62nd minute of the second half, but Leverkusen held on to complete their historic victory. 

Following the match, the players celebrated together on the field while Alonso jubilated with his coaching staff before raising the Bundesliga trophy in front of an enthusiastic audience.

They clinched their maiden Bundesliga title, breaking Bayern Munich’s 11-year stranglehold, and they’re in both the German Cup final and a European cup final.

Leverkusen had never won a league title in their 120-year history prior to this season, but they romped away with the Bundesliga this time around, finishing on 90 points from 34 matches, with 28 wins and six draws.

Across these matches, Alonso's men scored 89 goals and conceded just 24 times, highlighting their dominance.

They finished the season 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart, who overtook Harry Kane's Bayern Munich in the table on the final day.

With Kane absent due to a back injury, Bayern raced into a two-goal lead, but collapsed to a 4-2 defeat, while Stuttgart eased past Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 to jump a point and a place above Thomas Tuchel's side. 

Leverkusen also remain on course to win an unprecedented historic Treble without losing a single game. 

They are set to play Serie A outfit Atalanta by the end of May, and then will then take on Kaiserslautern in the DFB-POKAL final few days later.

Leverkusen have only previously won the Europa League once, when it was known as the UEFA Cup back in 1987-88.

They have also won the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) once in 1993, and have finished runners-up in the competition three times since.
