Timo Werner Set To Return To The Premier League After Nightmare Spell At Chelsea.

RB Leipzig striker, Timo Werner looks set for a shock return to the Premier League as Tottenham Hotspur are willing to sign him on loan.

Timo Werner  is best known in England for his time with Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Champions League, after joining the Blues from Leipzig in 2020 for a cost of around £45 million, but with an underwhelming spell of just 23 goals in 89 appearances he failed to meet most expectations.

He then rejoined his former side in 2022, costing approximately £20m less for the Bundesliga team.

However, he has since struggled to recreate the form of his first spell with Leipzig when he scored 95 goals in 159 appearances, with his second tenure returning 18 goals in 54 games.

Werner has featured just eight times for Leipzig in the Bundesliga this season, scoring two goals, and his current contract runs until the summer of 2026.

He had been linked with a move to Manchester United and other Premier League sides as it was rumoured that he was unsettled in Germany and wanted a return to England.

Erik ten Hag reportedly eyed a striker to offer support to Rasmus Hojlund, who has scored just one league goal this season.

Tottenham are now keen having agreed on a deal to bring the German forward to north London on a six-month loan (until end of the season), with an option to buy him permanently for around £13m to £17m.

According to reports, the north Londoners will cover the striker's full wages for the rest of the campaign. 

The 27-year-old will become Spurs' first signing of the January transfer window, and he is set to bolster Ange Posteceglou's options in attack for the second half of the season. 

With club captain Son Heung-min unavailable for selection for the next few weeks due to the Asian Cup with South Korea, and with Ivan Perisic and Eric Dier reportedly looking set to leave the club in January, it is no surprise that Tottenham are looking to strengthen their squad, so Werner's arrival comes at the perfect time for the club.

Posteceglou's side were far from their best in the final third going forward against Burnley in the FA Cup game on Friday, with only a wonder strike form defender Pedro Porro saving them from a replay.

Werner is expected to fly to London in the next 24 hours to complete his return to the Premier League.

Leipzig manager Marco Rose has confirmed the German's departure, citing that the striker sought more game time ahead of the European Championship this summer (Euro 2024). 

Speaking to Sky Germany, Rose, who has previously managed Borussia Monchengladbach and Dortmund, said; 

"It's right that Timo wants to go on loan, as he would like to go to the European Championship. We wish him all the best and are keeping our fingers crossed for him."
