Pochettino Reacts To His Wasteful Chelsea Team Defeat Against Brentford In The West London Derby at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea boss, Mauricio Pochettino, reacts to his team's disappointing 2-0 loss against Brentford in Saturday’s Premier League early kick-off tie.

Pochettino looked to be turning the Blues' form around after three wins and a draw in their past four matches but he was left angry, frustrated and in disbelief by the performance of his team against a Brentford side that was a constant threat on the counterattack and both goals came from that route.

The West London derby encounter at Stamford Bridge, saw the first half being one-sided, with the Blues playmaker Cole Palmer setting up great chances for Noni Madueke, Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling. All of them were squandered, with Madueke's shot hitting the crossbar, as the first half ended goalless.

After the restart Chelsea's wastefulness became more apparent, and the Bees' finally got the chance to punish their West Londoners sloppiness, with an unmarked Ethan Pinnock heading the opener from Bryan Mbeumo wicked right-wing cross just before the hour (58 mins).

Thomas Frank’s side were happy to sit deep and soak up the pressure as they once again frustrate their hosts, who become increasingly vulnerable to the counter-attack.

Chelsea barely created a chance in the final half hour, and they did not have a shot on target while goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was forced to deny Mbeumo and Yegor Yarmolyuk in the closing minutes.

Mbeumo then added the second in fifth minute of stoppage time following a fast break counter attack with Sanchez having gone up for a late corner that Chelsea failed to take advantage of to level the game, he was left vainly chasing Neal Maupay before stumbling to the ground as Mbeumo tapped the ball into the empty net in the 90+6 minutes.

As frustrations boiled over late on, Jesus Perez - the assistant to Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino - was shown a red card in the technical area.

After a slow start to the season, It was Brentford's third league win of the season following an eight-game winless run in all competitions. 

They have now won two games consecutively after their impressive 3-0 home win against Burnley last Saturday.

While extending their unbeaten run in London derbies to 13 matches, the victory lifted the Bees to 10th in the table on 13 points, one point and one place above Chelsea who have just three wins from 10 games.

For a historic third season in a row, Brentford have come to West London rivals Chelsea and emerged victorious at Stamford Bridge. They became the first side in Premier League history to win each of their first three games against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the competition.

Chelsea lost last season (2-0), and the season before (4-1), which was the first year Brentford played in the Premier League.

This means boss Thomas Frank has more league wins at Chelsea's home ground than their two most recent managers combined.

Since February Chelsea have won only two home league matches - against relegated Leeds last season and newly promoted Luton Town this season - and have failed to score in four of their 10 games this season.

They have only won one of their six league games at home this season, and that was against Luton in August.

Chelsea failed to score a goal for the third time in their last four league games at Stamford Bridge and in four of their 10 league games this season. Of the 10 teams above them in the table, only Manchester United have scored fewer than their 13 goals.

When asked after the game whether there are enough goalscorers in his squad, Pochettino admitted: "At the moment, no.

"The analysis is clear. In the first half, we should score and we didn't score.

"We dominated, created chances and the opponent didn't cross the halfway line. We need to blame ourselves because we were not nasty or clinical. 

"For sure the game changed in the second half, we cannot concede these types of goals and this is our mistake."

The former Tottenham and PSG manager added;

"[Christopher] Nkunku proved he can score in the big leagues but was injured in the last pre-season game.

"We need to recover [Armando] Broja. Jackson is young and needs time to adapt.

"I am not happy. The players and the club also aren't.... The Argentine continued.

"We need to be more nasty in the last third. We need to be more clinical.

"It's a very young group who need to improve in this area more than any other."

Pochettino also supports Sanchez following recent criticism: "He is very relaxed, very calm. We are helping him. Football is about mistakes".

"It's about experience. You want a keeper at Chelsea to deal with this situation. We're giving him our confidence and trust and he's working hard every day.

"The responsibility is with the whole team and the coaching staff is the first".

"To blame someone is to blame us, myself, but not him".

Chelsea will now switch focus to the EFL/ Caraboa Cup tie at home to Blackburn on Wednesday which Pochettino has so far led the Blues to home wins over Wimbledon and Brighton in the competition.

They then face a list of tough fixtures, starting with a trip to Tottenham on Monday November 6, then they host Man City on Nov. 12, followed by an away game at St James’ Park on Nov. 25.

In December they host Brighton on 3rd, before a visit to Old Trafford on Dec. 6 and at Goodison Park on Dec. 10.
