BREAKING:Man United Set To RE-SIGN David de Gea On A Short-Term Contract, As Onana Plans AFCON Exit.

Manchester United are set to RE-SIGN former goalkeeper David de Gea on a short-term contract after a disappointing end to his career at Old Trafford.

The club are reportedly worried they will be short of goalkeepers when André Onana goes to represent his country Cameroon in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) now scheduled to begin from 13th January to 11th February 2024.

De Gea was let go by the Red Devils at the end of his contract in the summer, bringing an end to his 12 years stay with the Premier League giants after joining from Atletico Madrid, that saw him rack up a whopping 545 appearances.

The manner in which De Gea left the club made captain Bruno Fernandes to publicly disagree with him not getting a proper send off.

De Gea was offered a wage cut to stay at Old Trafford, with his pay cheque being reduced from £375,000 a week to £200,000. However, that deal was later taken off the table.

The 32-year-old Spaniard has been a free agent since July, and has not played for another club since his departure.

According to the Sun, United did not expect Onana to change his mind and make a U-turn on his international retirement when they recruited him in the summer for £47.2million from Inter Milan.

He was bought as De Gea's replacement in the No.1 position and Erik ten Hag's first choice this season, which made them sell Dean Henderson, who was on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, to Crystal Palace in the same window.

United also signed Turkey international Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce in the summer, but Tom Heaton would be the only other goalie at the club during the AFCON and Ten Hag wants a quality option, hence the proposed move for De Gea.

Onana has endured a difficult start to his United career but was the hero in their last game against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday night with a fine penalty save in the dying minutes of their 1-0 win, as they secured their first three points in the Champions League this season.

CloudNine Sports reported in late August that Cameroon called up Onana for the internationals in September nine months following his suspension from the national team which was imposed for "disciplinary reasons", thought to stem from a falling-out with the National team coach Rigobert Song.

This made Onana immediately leaving the teams camp in Qatar before the group stages of the 2022 World Cup had concluded.

What Onana return for Cameroon would mean for United:

Onana could spend all four weeks on the southern coast of West Africa, the 27-year-old could miss as many as eight matches for the Red Devil's during this period.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have been drawn alongside defending champions Senegal in Group C, where they will also face Gambia and Guinea in the same group.

United would now turn back to De Gea as the best option right now, and bring him in on a three month contract to step in during Onana's absence.
