Son Heung-min Named As The New Captain Of Tottenham Hotspur, Following Harry Kane's Departure.

Son Heung-min, has been named the new CAPTAIN of Tottenham Hotspur following the departure of club legend Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Tottenham removed Hugo Lloris from position as club captain, as the goalKeeper has not featured in pre-season under new head coach Ange Postecoglou. LIoris is ‘in negotiations’ with Lazio to leave on a free transfer despite having a year left on his deal.

Kane had captained Spurs in three of their four pre-season friendlies and was expected to be handed the armband on a full-time basis. However, Spurs' all-time leading scorer completed an £86.4m move to Bayern Munich on Saturday morning.

Tottenham have now turned to Son, who is entering his ninth season with the North London club after signing from German club side Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

This new development, sees Son Heung-min become the first Asian player to captain a Premier League club.

Recent summer signing James Maddison and Argentine World Cup winner Cristian Romero have been named as new vice-captains.

Reacting to his appointment, Son, who also captains the South Korean national team, told the club channels that it was a “big honour.”

“It’s such a big honour to captain this huge club. 

"It was big surprise and a very proud moment. I’ve already said to the players that everyone should feel like a captain, on and off the pitch.

"It's a new season, a fresh start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband."

New boss Postecoglou added: "Sonny has great leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, and is the ideal choice to become our new captain.

"Everyone knows he is a world class player, and he has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room.

"He transcends groups within the squad. That's not just because he's popular - it's because of what he has achieved in the game, both here and as captain of South Korea.

“I’m looking forward to working with him,” the Australian said. “He’s another one that I think shows real leadership qualities.

“I look at him and he’s pretty much a conduit for the whole squad. He mixes in all groups. I don’t think it’s just because he’s popular. What he’s done in the game he has a certain standing in the game.

“It’s good to see that influence on the group. He’s got a massive influence on the group which doesn’t surprise me because I know he’s a leader for his nation and he’s been an icon for his nation for a long time.

“He carries that really well for someone who has been in the spotlight for that long. He has enormous respect among the players.”

Spurs begins their 2023-24 Premier League campaign underway against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday (2pm).
