Brazil Wear All Black Kit For The First Time In History Against Guinea In A Campaign Against Racism.
The Brazil's men national team wore a black kit for the first time in their history in a campaign against racism.
The Selecao entire team donned the black jerseys during their friendly match against Guinea in Spain on Saturday in order to bring awareness to the battle against racism, particularly for VinÃcius Júnior.
It is more than just a gesture of solidarity for Vinicius, who has been the victim of horrific racial abuse recently from opposing fans while playing for his club side Real Madrid.
The 22-year-old was most recently racially abused by Valencia fans during a La Liga clash at the Mestalla on May 21, in which he was eventually sent off. The incidents have drawn global attention and now his national team wants to show support by doing something about it.
He also wore the number 10 jersey, the nations most famous and emblematic shirt in the game which happens to be taking place in Barcelona, at the Espanyol's 40,000 capacity home ground in Spain, where authorities and top-flight La Liga have come under fire for not doing enough to stop the abuse.
The Brazilian football federation announced on June 12 that they would wear the black kits for the first half of the match against Guinea. They will switch back to their traditional yellow tops for the second half.
The federation also adopted the slogan, as the players stood behind boards that showed the powerful message: "Com racismo nao tem jogo" (With racism, there is no game).
The match was preceded by a minute's silence as the players from both sides kneeled down in a demonstration against racism.
"From the first day of my mandate, this [battle against racism] has been a priority," Brazil football federation president Ednaldo Rodrigues said in a statement.
"We held a seminar on this topic, and we created a working group with 60 persons who meet periodically to advance discussions and proposals.
"We are the only football federation in the world that created a mechanism that allows for points deductions for acts of racism, which is included in the federation's official competition guidelines."
Vinicius went on to score the final goal of the game, converting from the penalty spot in the 87th minute to ensure his side ran out with an emphatic 4-1 win, with Joelinton (27 mins), Rodrygo (30 mins) and Eder Militao (47 mins) also finding the net.
Brazil's national football team have never worn a black shirt in official competition in their history, but black Brazil shirts have been produced, specifically for goalkeepers and for training and warmups.
The South American side, are known for their traditional yellow shirts, which have been worn since the 1950s, when they ditched their white kits following a traumatic World Cup final defeat against Uruguay on home soil.
There has been an occasional white shirt used over the last 50 years, but yellow (primary jersey) and blue (secondary jersey) are Brazil's main colours, with hints of green, typically used in trims and collars.
On Thursday, VinÃcius agreed to join a revived FIFA task force to tackle racism in football, after the World football governing body announced this week that he will lead an anti-racism committee that aims to give players more say in how football tackles the issue of discrimination.
The five-time World champions will play another friendly against African giants Senegal in Lisbon on Tuesday June 20, and will continue its anti-racism campaign.
