Barcelona FemenΓ staged a magnificent comeback against Wolfsburg to win their second UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) crown.
It was Barcelona's fourth appearance in five seasons. While they were successful after a 4-0 win over Chelsea in 2021, Barcelona lost out in the final to record winners Lyon in 2019 and 2022, with last season’s heartbreaking contest ending in a 3-1 defeat.
Today's encounter was a game of two halves at the Philips Stadium, in Eindhoven as it looked as though it would be another final disappointment for the Catalan club.
Wolfsburg raced into a 2-0 lead in the 3rd and 37th minutes of the first half through Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp.
Barcelona showed heart, determination, and courage to fight back from two goals down.
They needed a three-goal second half comeback against the German side to claim their second title in three years.
A quick-fire double from Patricia Guijarro levelled the scores in the 48th and 50th minutes for Jonatan Giraldez's side.
Wolfsburg were clearly discombobulated by the goals and could no longer protect their box with the same level of defensive efficiency as the first half, and the winning goal felt like a matter of time.
The comeback was complete in the 70th minute after capitalising on some poor defending from their German opponents.
Wolfsburg struggled to get the ball clear resulting in a moment of pinball in the box and Fridolina Rolfo was there to fire her effort into the top corner to make it 3-2.
The victory means Barcelona have now won three trophies in each of the last three seasons. Three Liga F titles, two UEFA Women's Champions League's, two Copa de la Reina's and two Supercopa de Espana's!
They have enjoyed another successful season, winning the league title for the fourth consecutive campaign and lifting their third Spanish Super Cup.
Wolfsburg on the other hand, have fallen short in their last three final appearances, after being crowned European champions in 2013 and 2014, they finished as runners-up to Lyon in 2016, 2018 and 2020.
However, striker Asisat Oshoala missed the game due to a hamstring injury in her left thigh she suffered in their last league game of the season which they lost 2-1 to Madrid CFF, bringing an end to their 64-game unbeaten league run.
The 28-year-old did not train with her teammates since then, but finished the competition as the joint-top scorer with her teammate Aitana Bonmati scoring five goals each, and winning her second UWCL trophy with Barcelona Femeni.
The Nigeria's Super Falcons star is Barcelona Femeni's fourth All-time Highest Goal Scorer, and has 21 league goals in 28 appearances in 2022/2023 season.
She was the 2021/22 Spanish Women's Primera Division Top Scorer with 20 goals.
