Victor Osimhen Makes History, As He Scores To Hand Napoli Their First Serie A Title In 33-Years.

Victor Osimhen continues to make history, as he scored the much needed goal to hand Napoli their first Scudetto in 33 years following a 1-1 draw against Udinese on Thursday night, with a record-equalling five games left to play.

It is the first league crown for the Naples-based club since the era of late legendary Argentine football great, Diego Armando Maradona in 1990, that is eight years before Osimhen was born.

Napoli emulated the teams led by Maradona which won the league in 1987 and 1990.

Sandi Lovric had given Udinese the lead in the 13th minute, but Osimhen equalised for for the visitors in the 52nd minute to end the long wait for Napoli.

The goal set the Nigeria Super Eagles star alongside some of Africa's greatest players in the Italian top flight.

He broke the legendary Samuel Eto’o record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single Serie A season with 22 goals.

The 22nd goals for Osimhen in 28 appearances this season, surpassed Eto’o’s record of 21 goals set in the 2010/11 season when the Cameroonian striker played with Inter Milan, as the highest-scoring African in one season.

As if that was not enough , Osimhen also equalled another African great, George Weah, to become the African player with the most Serie A goals of all time. 

Osimhen’s 46th goal in his Serie A career has seen him draw level with Weah and above every other African player in the league’s history.

Weah scored 46 goals in 114 Serie A games playing fro Milan in Serie A between 1995 and 2000, while Osimhen has equalled that goal tally in only 78 matches for Napoli since he joined the club for a record fee of €70 million plus add-ons in July 2020 from French side Lille.

 Luciano Spalletti and his team will receive an emotional welcome when they return to Naples, where the partying is set to continue to until at least their next home fixture against Fiorentina on Sunday evening.

“Seeing Neapolitans happy is enough to give you a sense of that joy they are feeling,” Spalletti told DAZN on the verge of tears.

“These people will look to this moment when life gets hard, they have every right to celebrate like this. You feel a bit more relaxed knowing that you’ve given them this moment of happiness.”
