Ruud van Nistelrooy Quits As PSV Manager, Amids Player Revolt, And Lack Of Support.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has left his role as PSV Eindhoven manager due to lack of management support and amid reports of a player revolt.

The Dutch head coach is not happy with the circumstances at the giant club, accusing the club of failing to support him.

PSV confirmed the news on Wednesday that Van Nistelrooy had left following discussions with the club's management after it was reported that several players made complaints about his style of coaching and tactics.

Talks about his future were set for Sunday which is the end of the Dutch season, but the 46-year-old surprisingly tendered his resignation on Wednesday morning, just before their final game of the season on Sunday.

The club, who are second in Eredivisie, said they "regretted" his decision.

A statement from PSV reads: “Head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy announced on Wednesday morning that he would leave PSV.

“After several discussions about internal affairs that have taken place in recent weeks, a meeting took place on Tuesday evening between the Board of Directors and Van Nistelrooy. It was decided to keep the focus on next Sunday’s match against AZ and to continue talking after the season.”

 

There had previously been reports that Van Nistelrooy was unhappy with the club's transfer dealings last January.

Cody Gakpo left for Liverpool at the beginning of the window, which Van Nistelrooy may have expected, but he also lost Noni Madueke to Chelsea.

Despite the signing of Thorgan Hazard and Fabio Silva on loan, from Borussia Dortmund and Wolves respectively, his attack still felt the loss of his two stars.

The former Manchester United forward, started his coaching career with PSV's youth team (under 19s and U-21s), before getting the role in charge of the senior team at the beginning of the season as a replacement for Roger Schmidt.

He had an early setback when they were dumped out of the Champions League by Rangers in the playoff round.

But he has done a pretty decent job in his debut campaign in senior football, defeating Ajax in the finals of the Johan Cruijff Shield and TOTO KNVB Cup.

PSV are currently 10 points behind leaders Feyenoord and three points ahead of third-placed Ajax.

With just one game left of the season the Eindhoven side remain in second place and only need just a point to secure a spot in the Champions League qualification stage next season.

Assistant coach Fred Rutten will temporarily lead the side in their final league game away to fourth place AZ Alkmaar at the weekend, a game which they need to avoid defeat to deny Ajax their place in Europe's elite club competition.
