Man United GoalKeeper, De Gea Reacts To Winning The 2022/2023 Premier League Golden Glove Award.

Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea has won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award following a 1-0 win away to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

De Gea went into the Bournemouth game with two more clean sheets than his closest competitor, Alisson, who needed to Keep a cleansheet against Liverpool's opponents in their final two fixtures to even have a chance of sharing the accolade.

But a goal from Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey after 27 minutes at Anfield, to give his side a deserved 1-0 lead at half-time, made it impossible for the Brazilian shot-stopper to catch De Gea. 

De Gea has kept 16 clean sheets prior to the game against Bournemouth, conceding 41 goals in 36 games, and still has two games of the season to play, a game more than second-placed Liverpool keeper Alisson, who is on 14.

Newcastle’s Nick Pope and Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale, both have 13 clean sheets and have two matches left, and with Man City's Ederson on 11.

It's the second time United's long-serving goalkeeper with 542 appearances has won the Golden Glove award, following his success in 2017/18 when he kept 18 clean sheets.

With 17 clean sheets already this season, De Gea can beat his record of 18 Premier League clean sheets from 2017/18 if he shuts out Chelsea on Thursday night and Fulham next Sunday, 28 May. 

The Red Devils have only conceded eight goals at home this season. No other team in the top flight has let in less than 10, with Newcastle boasting the next best tally of 14.

De Gea pulled off some magnificent stops for Erik ten Hag's team this season, including the Premier League's Save of the Month for February when he clawed Kelechi Iheanacho's header off the line as United beat Leicester City 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Though the Spaniard, has also come under heavy criticism this season for making several costly mistakes, calling his future at the club into question after 12 years stay.

One of which was a mistake to gift Said Benrahma the winner in a 1-0 loss to West Ham earlier this month took his tally of errors that have led to a goal in all competitions this season to four, the joint most of any Premier League player, along with Tottenham's Hugo Lloris.

De Gea's United also suffered heavy defeats to Liverpool, Man City and Brentford, with a goal difference of 11. 

Man City boast the accolade of the fewest goals conceded so far on 31, with Newcastle having conceding 32.

The 32-year-old, is out of contract this summer, but he appears likely to sign a new contract at United, although it remains to be seen if he will be the first-choice between the sticks next season, with the board planning of signing a new goalkeeper.

Speaking on his achievement after the match, De Gea told reporters of his pride: “It means that myself and the team did really well. I think the team, especially in the defensive side, we’ve been pretty solid the whole season. I think I’ve played very good this whole season in helping the team as best as I can. 

"This campaign is a massive improvement from last season. 

"Today we kept a big clean sheet, a massive three points, we’re more close to finishing in the top four, so that’s very good for us. 

"We still have two games at home, and we will try to win both. 

"There are some very good goalies in the Premier League at the moment, so winning the Golden Glove award feels good."

Manager  Ten Hag also showered the praise on his goalkeeper for his performances this season, adding: "David de Gea made a mistake a few weeks ago but everyone can make mistakes. We defend with 11, that's why we have so many clean sheets. David made some great saves."
