Thomas Tuchel's Suffers First Defeat As Bayern's Manager Just After Trashing Dortmund.

Thomas Tuchel’s second game at Bayern Munich was an abject failure, there is no way to sugarcoat that, as favourites Bayern Munich crashed out of the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) on Tuesday night.

The new Bayern manager, made just one change to the side which thrashed Borussia Dortmund 4-2 to return to the Bundesliga summit on Saturday, swapping in Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo for Alphonso Davies.

Bayern came into the encounter at the Allianz Arena fresh from a sensational 4-2 win putting the game out of fierce rivals Dortmund’s reach with three goals in 10 first-half minutes last Saturday, as they go two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga after 26 round of matches.

The home side took the lead midway through the first half when France defender Dayot Upamecano rose highest to head in a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 19th minute.

Nicolas Hoefler further cancelled out  Upamecano’s opening goal for Bayern in the 27th minute with an unleashed screamer from outside the box following a scuffed clearance from winger Kingsley Coman.

The Bavarians kept Freiburg keeper Mark Flekken busy, but stars Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane couldn't find the back of the net.

With Tuchel growing impatient on the sidelines, his team upped the pressure which yielded no result.

Jamal Musiala handled in the box as he attempted to block a shot, which led to the referee pointing to the spot.

Forward Lucas Hoeler stepped up and converted from the spot late on (90+5 mins), sending goalkeeper Yann Sommer the wrong way to cancel any form taking the game to extra time, giving his side a 2-1 win.

"I am delighted with this result," said Freiburg coach Christian Streich. "We needed a bit of luck as well but we worked hard. The lads defended really well.

"It was a passionate performance and then you need such a moment to win it."

Freiburg had lost last year’s final on penalties to RB Leipzig but are now through to the semi-final for the second year in a row.

It was a first first German Cup defeat at the Allianz Arena for Bayern since 2017, as they fail to reach the last four for the third consecutive year. Freiburg are hoping to lift the German Cup for the first time.

"I am not really angry. We conceded two goals with two shots. I can't remember another chance from Freiburg," Tuchel said after the match. 

"The last pass, precision obviously, are all an issue. But still we had good moments we could have used, but just could not keep it up.

"In the end it is our fault. We are very disappointed [to lose] a quarterfinal at home. Of course I am responsible."

It was Thomas Tuchel's second game in charge of the German giants, after the Munich club sacked boss Julian Nagelsmann after they dropped behind Dortmund in the Bundesliga table and replaced him with Tuchel, who also had previously managed their rivals from 2015 to 2017.

Tuchel became the first manager to lose at home to Freiburg, bringing their treble dream to an end.

Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over Union Berlin thanks to Randal Kolo Muani's double within three minutes.

Bayern, who have a record 20 German Cup titles to their name, will have the opportunity to exact revenge when they face this same opponent again SC Freiburg away in the Bundesliga on Saturday, before travelling to England to play Man City in the Champions League first leg quarter-final on Tuesday night.
