Chelsea Stage A Famous Comeback To Defeat Borussia Dortmund And Advance To The Quarter-Finals Of The Champions League.

Chelsea defeats Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the second leg of their Champions League the round-of-16 game, which saw them come from behind to turn the tie around advancing 2-1 on aggregate to the quarter-finals.

Coming into the encounter at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, Chelsea had won just three of their previous 16 matches to fall to 10th in the Premier League and bow out early of both domestic cups.

They also had lost 1-0 when they travelled to Germany to face Dortmund in the first leg of this same fixture on 15th February.

Dortmund on the other hand, arrived in England on the back of a 10-game winning run in all competitions, which includes a dramatic 2-1 win at home against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga last Friday, as they stay second in the league standings with 49 points, same points as leaders Bayern Munich after 23 games each.

Kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes after Dortmund got stuck in the heavy London traffic on arrival to the stadium.

The visitors posed barely any attacking threat in the first half bar a Marco Reus free-kick that keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga did brilliantly to palm to safety.

Chelsea continued to create chances, and thought they had taken the lead when Kia Harvertz smashed a volley off the inside of the post and then finally found the net via the underside of the bar only for the goal to be ruled out for an offside against Raheem Sterling earlier in the move.

Sterling finally broke the deadlock for Graham Potter's men with his strike in the 43rd minute, blasting the ball into the back of the net on his second try after fluffing his first shot.

That was just Chelsea’s third goal in the last eight games.

Midfielder Marius Wolf was penalised for handling Ben Chilwell’s cross following a VAR review, as Dutch referee Danny Makkelie was advised to check the pitchside monitor, his decision was a penalty and Dortmund's protests fell on deaf ears.

Havertz who was announced as Chelsea new spot-kick taker by Potter in the pre-match press conference, the German international stepped up and hit the penalty inside of the right-hand post, as the ball rebounded back into play and was cleared by midfielder Salih Ozcan, who was clearly standing inside the area when the kick was taken.

Dortmund were penalised for encroachment, as Harvertz was provided with a second chance to put the hosts in front on aggregate with a re-taken penalty in the 53rd minute.

Havertz went the same way, same did goalkeeper Alexander Meyer, and this time the ball was a few more inches to the bottom left.

This was the first time Potter’s men scored more than once in a match for the first time in 13 matches in all competitions, since beating Bournemouth 2-0 in the Premier League on December 27.

The Blues boss Graham Potter was uncharacteristically animated on the touchline as he constantly whipped the crowd up throughout the game to keep pushing his side forward.

The victory relieved pressure on the Englishman's job which was on the line after a disappointing season that has so far failed to deliver any return despite Chelsea's huge spending of over £500 million ($600 million) on just new signings this season.

Todd Boehly, the Chelsea owner, was reportedly seen congratulating Potter in the players’ tunnel after full time, and when asked about the conversation, Potter joked “I’m still here” and said he had never seen the occasion as a make or break for his future at Stamford Bridge.

“I didn’t really think about it in that way,” he said. “My job is to prepare the team as best we could and support them. They’ve been suffering, nobody has enjoyed the run we’ve had, that’s why today was important.

 “There was a fantastic feeling around the dressing room... He told BT Sport.

“Everyone’s delighted. We have been through a tough period, and obviously, this competition means a lot to us.

“We wanted to get into the last eight, which we’ve done, and now it sets us up for a good few weeks.”

Chelsea remain in the hunt for a third European Cup glory, as they advance to the quarter-finals. The West London club return to domestic action this Saturday afternoon when they travel to Leicester City, hunting a third straight win.
