PSG Are Dumped Out Of The Coupe de France After A 2-1 Defeat To Marseille In The Round-of-16.

Paris Saint-Germain have been dumped out of the Coupe de France round-of-16 on Wednesday night.

Christophe Galtier endured his worst night as PSG manager as his side slipped to defeat in Le Classique.

Marseille hit twice on each half at the Stade Vélodrome and defended diligently to see off a largely ineffective PSG side who were without key player Kylian Mbappe.

PSG had eliminated Pays de Cassel in the round-of-32 with Mbappe scoring five goals in that encounter in January, Neymar scored one, and Carlos Soler scoring the last, as Lionel Messi was unavailable for selection at the time.

Going into the last-16, Messi and Neymar who headed the PSG attack on the night, were no to be seen, as the visitors suffered without the injured Mbappe.

Marseille dominated the play for a long period of time, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into a series of saves. They finally broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, following a clumsy foul from Sergio Ramos on Cengiz Under.

Former Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez stepped up to take the penalty, and sent Donnraumma the wrong way to give the home side the lead.

Ramos redeemed himself on the stroke of half-time (45+2 mins), nodding a Neymar corner into the net, to draw level for PSG.

Marseille retook the lead shortly after the break, with Ukraine midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi smashing the ball past a sprawling Donnarumma in the 57th minute after a moment of poor PSG defending.

PSG failed to create much without Mbappe's pace and trickery threat going forward, as the host held on to a 2-1 win on the night.

The defeat sends the record 14-time winners out of the French Cup.

Marseille, who are second in Ligue 1 behind PSG, last won the French Cup in 1988-89.

The two sides meet again on 26 February in the league in Marseille, who trail the leaders by eight points.
