OFFICIAL: Liverpool Hijacks Man United Deal To Sign Cody Gakpo From PSV.

Liverpool have beaten Man United in the race to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, the deal has been signed tonight between clubs.

Gakpo will sign long-term deal later this week as contract is fully agreed too.

Liverpool will pay £37m plus add-ons, up to £50m potential package.

Having sold Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich last summer, coupled with long -term injury crisis to attackers Diogo Jota and Luiz Diaz, while Darwin Nunez is struggling to find his rhythm after his move from Benfica, Liverpool took interest in Gakpo.  

Gakpo's stock increased at the 2022 World Cup with three goals in five appearances before the Netherlands were knocked out at the quarter-final stage on penalties to Argentina. He scored in each of his country's group games against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar.

Before the World Cup Cody Gakpo had a great season with the PSV as he made a total of 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games in all competitions. He was the undisputed "king" of the Eredivisie league in the Netherlands.

He has also managed three goals and registered two assists in five Europa League outings.

The longtime Manchester United's target Gakpo, will travel to England in the next days to undergo medical tests and then sign the contract. Gakpo could make his debut for the Reds when they visit Brentford in the Premier League on January 2, 2023.

United had reportedly instigated talks but were still to finalise a financial offer for the 23-year-old and Liverpool have taken advantage.

He even came close to joining United last summer, but the deal didn't go through.

Gakpo had offers from Leeds, Southampton and Chelsea last summer but chose to stay at PSV after the Dutch club rejected offers.

Jurgen Klopp's men moved up to sixth in the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa in a hugely entertaining game at Villa Park, with goals from Mo Salah, Virgil van Diji, and Stefan Bajcetic. Ollie Watkins scored the only goal for Unai Emery's side.
