OFFICIAL: Eden Hazard Announces His Retirement From International Football At Age 31.

Eden Hazard has on Wednesday, officially announced his retirement from international football.

This is coming less than a few days after Belgium’s elimination from the group stage of the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Red Devils are still ranked second in the world by FIFA but many of their so-called 'Golden Generation' players are in their 30s, as they disappointedly finished third in Group F behind Morocco and Croatia. 

Hazard played in all three World Cup games in Qatar but Belgium only managed to score once, in a 1-0 win over Canada. They were beaten 2-0 by Morocco and drew 0-0 with Croatia.

After 126 caps, scoring 33 goals and 36 assists, the Belgium's golden generation captain announced his retirement from international football at just age 31.

The former Chelsea star led the side to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup after losing 1-0 to France, and went on to defeat England to finish third which was their best-ever finish at the tournament.

He received the Silver Ball award awarded to the player adjudged the second-best at the World Cup for his contribution to the campaign.

Just three players have ever won more caps than Hazard, while only Romelu Lukaku (68) has scored more goals for the national side.

In a post via his Instagram account, Hazard said, “Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008.”

He added, “I have decided to put an end to my international career. The succession is ready. I’ll miss you.”

The Real Madrid forward, ended his 14 years stay with the national team since making his debut as a teenager (17-years) in November 2008 coming on as a substitute against Luxembourg.

He went on to feature at three World Cups and two European Championships, as well as captaining the team 56 times, but have been unable to deliver a maiden major trophy.

He last wore the Belgium jersey on December 1 when he came into play in the last minutes of the final group stage match against Croatia (0-0).
