Andre Onana Retires From The Cameroon National Team, After Controversial World Cup Exit.

Andre Onana has announced his retirement from the Cameroon national team at age 26.

The Inter Milan shot-stopper, had a fallout with legend and coach Rigobert song during the World Cup, which was about Onana’s style of goalkeeping.

Rigobert Song reportedly demanded that Onana plays a more traditional keeping which means he comes out less, but Onana refuses to change his style of play.

Onana's last international games was the 1-0 loss to Switzerland in their World Cup opener on November 24, before he was dropped in the next group game against Serbia which the drew 3-3, as Onana left the team camp and then flew out of Qatar before the end of their campaign.

The country's federation (FECAFOOT) said at the time he was suspended for "disciplinary reasons".  FA President Samuel Eto’o even tried to intervene, but could not reconcile their differences.

The Indomitable Lions conceded three goals without Onana, while he was between the sticks he only conceded one from his fellow Cameroonian native, Breel Embolo.

Cameroon went on to beat Brazil 1-0 in its final Group G game but did not advance to the round of 16.

Onana, has now made the decision to bow out from international football altogether.

Taking to his social media pages, the 26-year-old said: “After endless hours of training, endless trips and a lot perseverance, I can proudly say that I have fulfilled my great dream.

“But every story, however beautiful it may be, has to end. And my story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end.

“Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player.

“Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team and for our people who have always supported us…

“My feeling will never change. My Cameroonian heart will continue to beat and wherever I go I will always fight to lift the flag of Cameroon as high as possible.”

Onana made his debut in 2016 and went on to win 34 caps.

On his disagreement with Song, Onana later released a statement then stating;

"I have put all my efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences, but there has been no will on the other side," Onana said then. "Some moments are difficult to assimilate."

Song on the other hand later said he needed all his players to "show discipline and respect."

Onana is now back at club level where comes out more and plays like an 11th man for the team which gives him more touches on the ball.

After five weeks of World Cup break, the Serie A returns back on Wednesday, January 4th, with Inter Milan hosting league leaders Napoli on the day.
