Fans have reacted to the Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's internet-breaking picture shared on the eve of the 2022 FIFA World Cup by both players respectively.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi blew football world away with a breathtaking photo together, regarded as one of the most iconic sporting images you would see this year.
The photo has the two legendary footballers sitting together playing chess with both locked in concentration about what their next move should be, as they compete on a board constructed from a Louis Vuitton-branded luggage.
It is part of the most recent advertising campaign for the fashion brand Louis Vuitton.
Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi was wearing a grey round-neck sweater with sleeves drawn up to reveal his tattoos. He has one hand on his chin.
While Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, wore a navy turtleneck sweater.
The image was posted by both players via the photo-sharing platform (Instagram) with a caption to their social media profiles “Victory is a State of Mind. A long tradition of crafting trunks.”
The picture quickly went viral and may well go down as one of the most liked posts in the history of Instagram after racking up more than 10 million likes across both posts in just over 30 minutes.
Fans were shocked to see an image of the pair together posted online, as both Ronaldo and Messi have dominated the beautiful game for more than 15 years.
The two long-term opponents have become icons of the sport, and taken the sport to new heights with their incredible achievements.
Messi and Ronaldo have a total of 12 Ballon d'Ors between them, 1,814 appearances, 70 trophies, 1,604 goals and 581 assists.
Football fans as usual were quick to comment to the image, which caused social media to explode.
“Will this be the most liked tweet in history.” Others simply put “WOW” One Twitter user speculated, as they voiced their approval at the classy picture.
Another said; "Nothing much to see here... Just two goats playing chess. Picture of the century."
One other user said; “The greatest picture I’ve seen this year”,” while another fan pointed out that Ronaldo was winning because he had one more piece than Messi.
A fourth said: "This is Legendary, "Best. Photo. Ever."
A cross-section of other fans, were astonished the pair had united for the campaign, with one user summing it up: “Messi and Ronaldo posted this Picture! They were in the studio together! It’s Madness!!
“What ever Louis Vuitton is planning to sell. It’s the fastest and easiest sellout ever. – This is one of the greatest pictures ever. What’s better than one goat [greatest of all time]. Two .”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo, 37, and Messi, 35, are both set to make their fifth World Cup appearances in Qatar, in what could be a potential final World Cup for the football legends.
Many believe it is their last chance at getting their hands on the biggest trophy in football.
They kick off their World Cup campaigns in the coming days. Messi and his Argentina team-mates take on Saudi Arabia on November 22, while Ronaldo and Portugal face Ghana on November 24.
If both teams advance from the group stage, they could meet in the knockout rounds in what would be a cracking encounter.
