Erling Haaland Breaks Another Important Record Following Man City's Win Against Southampton.
Erling Haaland scored in Manchester City's 4-0 Premier League victory over Southampton at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon, breaking Lionel Messi's scoring record under Pep Guardiola.
After joining the Citizens for £51 million in the summer, the 22-year-old has had a career-best start.
Before Southampton's arrival, Haaland had a stunning 19 goals in only 12 games for City in all competitions, including a brace in the 5-0 Champions League triumph against Copenhagen on Wednesday night.
The Norwegian international extended his scoring streak against the Saints in the 65th minute with a sweeping left-footed shot, giving the Citizens a four-goal lead at the Etihad after Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden, and Riyad Mahrez had already scored earlier on.
Haaland now holds the record for the longest scoring streak under Guardiola, surpassing former Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
Messi, who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain, scored in nine straight games for Barcelona in October and November 2010, totaling 15 goals during a productive time at Camp Nou under Guardiola.
However, Haaland has now scored 10 times in a row for Guardiola's Man City, totaling 18 goals.
After just nine appearances this season, Haaland's most recent goal against Southampton has moved him onto 15 Premier League goals, eight more than his closest rival Harry Kane (7), who is currently in second place.
With 29 Premier League games left, the Norwegian needs 18 more goals to surpass Mohamed Salah's 32-goal Golden Boot record from the 2017–18 season.
In addition, City's number nine needs 20 goals to break Alan Shearer and Andy Cole's joint record of 34 Premier League goals from a 42-game season.
Meanwhile, the playmaker for the Citizens, Kevin De Bruyne, was ManCity's top scorer in the League last season with 15 goals.
Erling Haaland has equalled that tally after only nine matches this campaign!
De Bruyne now has 95 assists in the Premier League, surpassing Arsenal veteran Dennis Bergkamp (94) to move into fifth place overall.
In the Premier League, De Bruyne has now outpaced David Silva (93) to become the team's all-time best assist provider.
After defeating Southampton by a score of four, Pep Guardiola's team move to the top of the Premier League standings, two points ahead of Arsenal, who will face Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
