Newly Promoted Premier League Boys Fulham Holds Liverpool To A 2-2 Draw In Season Opener.

The Premier League is back for the opening weekend of the 2022-23 season, with newly promoted Fulham earning a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in a thrilling early kick-off encounter on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side lost the Premier League title last season on final day fixtures, having finished second behind eventual champions Manchester City and are in for a long slog again in the 2022/23 campaign. 

Meanwhile, Having bounced back at the first attempt in the Championship, champions Fulham are hoping to avoid relegation under Marco Silva.

The game which went down at Craven Cottage, sees Aleksandar Mitrovic who scored 43 goals in the championship for Fulham last season bullies Trent Alexander-Arnold at the back post and powers a header home from Kenny Tete's cross in the 32nd minute to hand the lead to the host.

New signing Darwin Nunez who was subbed in for Firmino in the 51st minute, takes just 13 minutes into his Premier League debut to score his first Liverpool goal and equalise.

Fulham retook the lead again through Mitrovic in the 72nd minute.

The Serbian scores his side's second goal from the penalty spot after drawing a clumsy foul from Virgil van Dijk.

After assisting Darwin Nunez, last season joint top scorer Mohamed Salah gets a goal for himself in the 80th minute, as Liverpool's £85m signing from Benfica returns the favour, allowing him to tap in to level the scoreline.

Moh Salah now becomes the first player to score in 6 consecutive opening day games (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23).

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has called out his players and has questioned their attitude following the disappointing draw against the West Londoners;

“The best thing about the game is the result actually,” Klopp said after the match. 

“We got a point from a really bad game from my side. It's a question now, how can that happen? I said already to my colleagues, the attitude was not right in the beginning. Then we wanted to fight back but you don't fight it easy anymore, the pitch was dry, stuff like this. We played into their cards.

“Most of the time when we found direction and ended up in front of their goal, we probably had the bigger chances even when we were 1-0 down, crossbar, all these kind of things. The result is fine, I don't think we deserved more than that, but the performance is massively improvable.”
