Thomas Tuchel Reacts To Barcelona's Interest In Cesar Azpilicueta
Cesar Azpilicueta, the captain of Chelsea, has drawn criticism from Thomas Tuchel for his chase by Barcelona, and the Blues may decide to keep him this summer.
Since they had acquired Andreas Christensen from Chelsea this summer window on a free transfer, Barça has made no secret of their intention to sign Azpilicueta, who has urged Chelsea to allow him depart on a discounted deal, to their ranks.
However, Tuchel has stated that any deal is susceptible to failure because of how differently the two clubs view the 32-year-old.
"It's a challenging question since I'm unsure of whether I want to grant Azpi's request. It eventually comes down to what we want. I was merely drawing a parallel between how hard we fought for [Kalidou] Koulibaly, a member of the national squad who is about the same age, "Tuchel remarked.
"He is a crucial member of the Napoli team, but Chelsea's captain is a Spanish international. Barcelona doesn't see him on that level, yet I might put him on the same level. Because he is such a big player, I'm not sure if I want to give him what he wants.
"We don't give other clubs much thought. The emphasis is on us and our requirements. I told him that and now I'm telling you that I understand on a personal and professional level. But I'm not just playing this part to fulfill his demands. I want what is best for Chelsea because I am the manager of Chelsea.
"Although he doesn't like it, he comprehends. He finds it difficult because the other club is always on him. On the first of September when things calm down, then he can play on his finest level."
He said, "Maybe a little bit," when asked if he was angered by Barcelona's pursuit of Azpilicueta.
