Reactions As Victor Osimhen Miss Out Of The CAF Awards Nominations List

On Thursday, the Confederation of African Football announced the nominees for the various football categories ahead of the biggest and most prestigious football Award in the continent.

A 30-man shortlist was released and winner of the Africa Cup of Nations, Sadio Mane, and his former teammate from Liverpool, Mo Salah, alongside Algerian and Man City winger, Riyad Mahrez are the leading candidates to scoope the Africa men's player of the year award 2022.

Meanwhile, Moses Simon and Akinkunmi Amoo were the only Nigerian players nominated for the Player of the year, and Young player of the year respectively.

Although Super Eagles players were notably missing especially Victor Osimhen who plays at Napoli in the Italian Serie A.

Osimhen, with the Super Eagles, failed to qualify for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, and were knocked out in the Round of 16 at the 2021 AFCON by Tunisia.

Some of the players who made the Men’s Player of the Year nominees list include, Bertrand Traore, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Karl Toko Ekambi, Vincent Aboubacar, Franck Kessie, Sebastien Haller, Mohamed ElNeny, Musa Barrow, Naby Keita, Yves Bissouma, Achraf Hakimi, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly.

However the 30-man shortlist list has brought uproar and fuss from football fans all over the world who took to social media to air their thoughts about Victor Osimhen missing out on the list of nominees.

The Napoli star scored 18 goals and 2 assist in 32 appearance in all competition for the Italian side and he round off his impressive season with Best U-23 player award in the league.

Although, The Nigerian striker couldn't feature in the AFCON 2021 held in January due to injury but Victor Osimhen has been phenomenal in Nigeria quest for to qualify for the continent tournament coming up next year. He's currently the AFCON Qualifier top scorer with 5 goals.

The award criteria has been an unending debate in recent years whether it's reflect an African based or an abroad based performance.

The CAF best 11 for 2019 do not have any player who plays on the continent, it even feature players who did not take part in the Afcon 2019.

The CAF Awards 2022 will be held before the final of the Africa Women Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled to take place from July 2 to July 23.
