OFFICIAL: Ajax Completes The Signing Of Super Eagles Defender Calvin Bassey From Rangers.
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has joined Ajax from Rangers on a five-year agreement, which is a club record for the Scottish side.
On Monday, sources reported that the 22-year-old had traveled to Amsterdam to complete the £22.5 million deal, which the Dutch powerhouses have now officially announced.
A deal has been concluded that would see the Argentine transfer to Old Trafford for a cost that could increase to £57.5 million, while the versatile Nigerian international has been signed as a replacement.
Bassey, a left-back by profession but is at ease playing in central defense, shone during Rangers' thrilling journey to the Europa League final the previous campaign.
Following Steven Bergwijn's £26 million transfer from Tottenham earlier this summer, the defender is now Ajax's second-most expensive acquisition of all time when they agreed to a £22.5 million fee for him.
Ajax and Calvin Bassey of Rangers FC have agreed to the defender's transfer to Amsterdam, according to a club statement.
The English-Nigerian athlete has agreed to a five-year deal with Ajax that will go into effect right away and last until June 30, 2027. Ajax will give Rangers FC a transfer fee of EUR 23 million. That sum could rise to EUR 26.5 million when factors are taken into account.
For Rangers, this transaction sets a new club record. "Rangers Football Club can today confirm Calvin Bassey has joined Ajax in a deal that is the largest in Rangers' history," said the statement.
Ben Davies, a Liverpool center back who never actually played for the Reds, has been signed by the Gers as a replacement for Bassey in the meantime.
