Nottingham Forest Set To Sign Taiwo Awoniyi In a Club Record Deal.
Following an impressive season with the Bundesliga side, Union Berlin, former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is likely to join Nottingham Forest in a club-record move from Union Berlin.
After finally ending their 23-year exile with victory in the Championship play-off final, Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest have agreed a new record £17.5m fee for Nigerian forward, Taiwo Awoniyi.
Manager Steve Cooper is ready to strengthen his team for life in the Premier League.
Awoniyi joined Union Berlin from Liverpool in 2021 for £7million, and the 24 years old went on to score 20 goals, providing 5 assists, in 42 appearances for the club.
Despite spending six years at Anfield following a £400,000 transfer in 2015, Awoniyi never made a senior appearance for the Reds due to a lack of a work visa but had loan spells at six different clubs; FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Mouscron (twice), Gent, Mainz and Union Berlin) before permanently joining Union Berlin last year.
According to the Telegraph, Union Berlin valued him around £20, but have now agreed for a slightly lesser fee with Nottingham Forest.
Due to sell-on clauses, Liverpool will get a cash windfall of £2m as a result of his £17.5 million move to the City Ground and fulfill his dreams of playing in England.
Only five players, including Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland, outscored Awoniyi over the course of the season and Union Berlin secured a fifth place finish, enough for entry directly into the Europa League group stage.
Forest are also reportedly looking to sign Mainz captain Moussa Niakhate, and have looked to Germany for business this summer.
The Bundesliga club value the French defender at roughly £13 million, and Forest's proposal of £8.6 million was turned down.
