Luka Modric Reveals 'Secret Plan' That Was Done To Stop Liverpool

Real Madrid's ability to hold their cool in the Champions League final, according to Luka Modric, is what set them apart from Liverpool.

With a one-goal lead, the La Liga winners claimed their 14th Champions League title on Saturday night, proving resilient despite tremendous pressure from Jurgen Klopp's side.

Despite a positive first half performance from the Reds, they were unable to respond after going behind with 30 minutes left to play at the Stade de France in Paris.

Modric claimed that turning point of the much anticipated encounter came when Liverpool 'panicked' after Real Madrid had a goal from Karim Benzema ruled out for offside just before half-time in the Champions League final.

"I think we defended too much in the first half," the midfielder told CBS Sports (via the Echo).

"We didn't have a lot of possession of the ball." Liverpool used a high press and succeeded. We, on the other hand, remained composed and did not panic.

"We played considerably better in the second half and had more possession, and then we got the goal.

"I think we started believing more after that disallowed goal, and I think Liverpool panicked and weren't as comfortable anymore."

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois played avital role in the game, and was awarded man of the match for his heroics in Paris, there's no denying that Los Blancos were far more ruthless when faced with chances in front of goal.

Jurgen Klopp 's side had 24 shots on goal across the 90 minutes, nine of which were on target, while Carlo Ancelotti's men had just two efforts on target, but were able to make their chances count.

This was Liverpool's third Champions League final under the current manager and their second defeat to Real Madrid after they were beaten 3-1 back in 2018 in Kyiv. 

The 14th title win for Real Madrid in Paris was a more remarkable win for the Spanish giants, as the Croatian star confirmed during the celebrations at the Bernabeu that is will stay with the club for a further season.

Modric's standard of performances shown throughout the season has once again been the main reason for the former Ballon d'Or winner to extend his stay until June 2023 at the Spanish capital.

According to reports, there will be no increase or decrease in salary for the 36-year-old in his new deal.
