Premier League Referees Martin Atkinson, Jon Moss To Join Mike Dean To RETIRE At End Of Season.

Two experienced Premier League referees Martin Atkinson and Jonathan Moss, will hang up their whistles at the end of this season and follow Mike Dean into retirement in a revamp of officiating in the top flight.

Jonathan Moss on the other hand, was first appointed to take charge of a Premier League match in December 2010 between Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa, however the game was postponed due to heavy snow, but eventually took charge of a top-flight game in January 2011.

Moss a former PE teacher, taught Liverpool midfielder James Milner and sent him off in a match three years ago. He was also the referee for the FA Cup Final in May 2015 which Arsenal demolished Aston Villa 4-0 at Wembley Stadium, and has gone on to be the man in the middle on 272 occasions in the Premier League.

Atkinson on the other hand, was appointed to referee his first Premier League game between Man City-Birmingham City on 20 April 2005, cautioning one player and awarding the home side a penalty kick in a 3–0 result, he also took charge of the 2011 FA Cup Final which Man City defeated Stoke City 1-0, issuing two yellow cards to two Stoke players during the game, and has taken charge of 459 League games in total.

Atkinson and Moss retirement follows that of another experienced Premier League official, Mike Dean, who has been a top-flight official since 2000, has gone on to referee over 553 matches, the longest-serving of all current referees, with the Premier league record of the most Red cards (114) issued in the league, which is more than any one else.

Dean, has also shown the most yellow cards - 2,026 in total, and awarded a Premier League record of 184 penalties.

The trio have, together been responsible for controversy in far too many matches but this will be their last season.

According to the Telegraph, both Atkinson and Moss have both taken jobs with the Premier League next season, working  Mike Riley, general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL),, although no position has been announced for Mike Dean.

The 53-year-old will not have a role in refereeing, despite being in talks to be a full-time video assistant referee (VAR), but it looks as if Dean, sees his future elsewhere.

While Moss become the manager of the select group of referees in the Premier League, Atkinson will coach them, the jobs with helping the next generation of referees come through have been created specifically for the pair.

Jon Moss 51', will next be in action to officiate the crucial clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City at White Hart Lane on Sunday, May 1, 2022 and would be the fourth official for Watford vs Burnley on Saturday, April 30, 2022.

While Mike Dean 51', will also take charge of the game between West Ham and Arsenal at the London stadium on Sunday, May 1, 2022, in top four battle.
