Man City And Liverpool ELIMINATES Atletico And Benfica To Advance To The UCL Semi-final.

English club sides Manchester City and Liverpool Knocks-out Atletico Madrid and Benfica in the Champions League quarter final return-leg fixtures on Wednesday night. 

A dramatic filled game at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night saw Man City put up a very disciplined and solid performance against their opponent Atletico Madrid in a hostile territory.

Atletico were much more adventurous in the second leg, as they were chasing a much-needed goal to balance the tie, but despite their best efforts, the La Liga Champions could not get past Man City, and had to end the game with 10 men as defender Felipe was sent off for a second bookable offence on Phil Foden.

City failed to score on the night having endured extreme physicality from Diego Simone's men, as well as waves of intimidation from the home crowd.

Diego Simeone's gameplan was fulfilled to a limit, as his side put in a near-perfect performance on the night, managing to keep the Premier League Champions at bay for the majority of the game.

The game witnessed a feisty brawl in the last minutes, with the referee dishing out seven cards in injury time with a lot of talking points. Phil Foden was kicked, Raheem Sterling headbutted and Jack Grealish hair dragged with tempers boiling over as the fight continued into the tunnel.

The tension had been building all night and things got heated between Atletico and Man City in stoppage time with Felipe receiving a red card 🟥

Regardless the situation, the Cityzens were the side to advance to the next round after a 1-0 aggregate victory, thanks to Kevin de Bruyne's 75th minute strike from the first leg at the Etihad Stadium.

The result means that Pep Guardiola has now reached his ninth Champions League semi-final, the most of any manager in the history of the competition.

They set up a semifinal clash against another Madrid side, but this time its the most successful side in the competitions history Real Madrid who saw off Chelsea a day before.

City manager Pep Guardiola said after the game, that it was a tough one and it was important that Man City go through. “Everyone saw the action, but I have nothing to say,” 

“It is the champion of Spain and they played with energy. They were better than us in the second half and we were lucky we didn’t concede. 

“The opponent is tough, we know it's not an easy place to come, all the teams in the Champions League come here and suffer so it is important we go through to the semi-final, it is well deserved.”

On the other hand, Liverpool booked their place in the competition's final four with an entertaining 3-3 draw with Benfica on the same night.

Having won 3-1 in Portugal a week earlier, Jurgen Klopp's side were looking to finish the job at Anfield.

They strolled into the semi-finals with a rather straightforward 6-4 aggregate win.

Ibrahim Konate opened the scoring again on the night in the 21st minute. It was the second goal of the season for the Liverpool defender having also scored his first against the same side last week.

Despite trailing by three aggregate goals, the away side Benfica didn't let their heads dropped as they found the leveller through Goncalo Ramos in the 32nd minute to go into break all square.

The second-half began more entertaining with Liverpool stepping things up.

Roberto Firmino netted his brace in the space of ten minute (55th and 65th mins) respectively to give the Reds a 3-1 lead.

Again, Benfica bounced back into the game when Roman Yaremchuck pulled one back in the 73rd minute, and youngster Darwin Nunez did go on to level the scores on the night with less than 10 minutes of the 90 remaining to end the thrilling encounter in a 3-3 draw.

The result means that Benfica have been eliminated form the competition, with Liverpool advancing to the semi-final on 6-4 aggregate.

They are set to face Unai Emery's Villarreal team  who shockingly knocked-out Bayern Munich a day before.
