Harry Maguire's Continued Selection Questioned By Some Man United Players

Harry Maguire's continued selection in Manchester United's Starting XI has reportedly been questioned by other players in the squad.

The 28-year-old's inconsistent form this season has been mixed at best, with poor displays especially in the disappointing 1-1 draws away to Burnley and at home to Southampton early February.

Maguire also let 22-year-old Portuguese forward Joao Felix run off him for Atletico Madrid's goal just 7 minute into the two sides' Champions League last-16 first-leg tie last week Wednesday, before Anthony Elanga scored a late equaliser in the 80th minute to draw the game 1-1.

All this has prompted other players to discuss Maguire's ongoing selection by boss Ralf Rangnick at the club's Carrington training ground.

The United’s captain became the most expensive centre-back in world football following a £80million move from Leicester in 2019.

United's interim manager has shown his consistent support for Maguire despite the various criticism targeted towards the England's centre-back.

Rangnick had recently laughed off claims during the change in captaincy controversy last month, insisting that his captain will keep the armband until the end of the season.

"I have never spoken to any player about a chance in captaincy, Harry is aware of that and so is Cristiano Ronaldo, who was rumoured to be in the frame for the armband," said the German interim boss.

"It's me who decides who is captain and I don't have to talk to anyone else about that.

"Harry is our captain and he will stay our captain.

"I don't see any reason to change that. He is also a player who has to develop and get better like all the other players.

"The way we are playing now is new to him, also because in the English national team he is used to playing in a back three and here at Manchester United in a back four, but still not being as proactive with that kind of defence when we try and be on the front foot trying to defend.

"This is something new to him and it will take some time for him to get used to that and adjust to that."

Maguire was an unused substitute as United kept a clean sheet in the goalless draw against Watford last Saturday, as Raphael Varane played alongside Victor Lindelof in central defence.

United’s plans to buy and strengthen the central defence in the summer transfer window, Antonio Rudiger could be an option if the Germany international doesn’t agree a new contract at Chelsea, while Barcelona’s young Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo is among the other names being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Maguire is expected to be in the team for Sunday's derby against Manchester City at Etihad.
