Egypt Boss Carlos Queiroz Resigns As Head Coach, After Failing To Qualify The Pharaohs For 2022 World Cup In Qatar

Carlos Queiroz has left his job as Egypt's coach after failing to qualify his team to 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Pharaohs were defeated 3-1 on penalties by Senegal after a 1-1 aggregate scoreline in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifiers playoff second-leg clash at the Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade in Senegal.

Egypt had won the first-leg 1-0 on Friday night, but were unable to hold on to the advantage in the return-leg, after a 1-0 defeat on the day through Hamdi Fathi',s early goal in the 4th minute that cancelled out Saliou Ciss’s own goal from the first leg.

Mohamed Salah, Ahmed Sayed Zizo, and Mostafa Mohamed missed Egypt’s penalties in Tuesday’s shootout defeat by Senegal.

This would be Queiroz second loss to the Teranga Lions under Aliou Cissé in just over three weeks after the Pharaohs were defeated 4-2 via same penalties in the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon following a goalless scoreline after extra-time.

Having failed to secure qualification for the biggest sporting event in the world, The Portuguese coach paid tribute to the Egyptian Football Federation via social media just immediately after the match.

“Dream is Over. From the bottom of my heart, my gratitude to Egypt Federation for this honour of coaching the National Team,” Queiroz posted on his official Twitter handle.

“To all my players and my staff, my recognition and humble thank you so much,” he added. “You will be always in my heart.

“It was my privilege to work and be helped by such dedicated and capable professionals and wonderful friends.

“Without you, nothing could be possible for me in my life,” he concluded. “I am very much proud of you lads.

“My best wishes and enormous gratitude to all Egyptian fans. To the future.”

The ex-Real Madrid manager was appointed national team of Egypt in September last year, took Egypt to the AFCON final despite been criticised for the teams conservative and negative style which led to the 1-0 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their group opener match.

He was further suspended on the touchline for the final after being sent off in the semi-final victory over host nation Cameroon.

Queiroz, who had two stints at Manchester United as Sir Alex Fergusons’s assistant, has also coached some national teams which includes South Africa, Colombia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, as well as his homeland Portugal.
