Man United's "David de Gea" Wins The Premier League Player of the Month For January.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has won his first ever Premier League Player of the Month award.

De Gea was named the Premier League Player of the Month for January despite keeping just one clean sheet in the month.

He clinched the award ahead of other nominees that featured Jarrod Bowen of West Ham, Man City's Kevin De Bruyne, Leeds Jack Harrison, Wolves Joao Moutinho and Southampton's James Ward-Prowse.

The Spaniard shot-stopper made some remarkable saves in matches and he's undoubtedly saved United points in pivotal moments.

No goalkeeper made more saves than De Gea during January in the big five European leagues 

He recorded a total of 22 saves in 4 league games, conceding 4 goals across January as United lost to Wolves, drew against Aston Villa and headed into the winter break on a positive note after winning consecutive games against Brentford and West Ham.

De Gea has so far kept only five clean sheets in the Premier League this season, but has been widely regarded as United's best player, helping them move up into the top four.

It's the first time that the 31-year-old would be winning the award in his 11-years spell at Old Trafford. 

De Gea becomes the first goalkeeper to win the award since February 2016 when Southampton’s Fraser Forster claimed it last.

He was also named Man United Player of the Month for the third consecutive months this season.

David de Gea speaking via the club's website said: "I’m very happy to have won the Premier League award too, I’d never won it before. I think I’ve been at a consistently high level over a good number of years now and just maybe I could have even won another one before now" 

“But as I always say, I believe the most important thing is winning silverware. We have to be battling it out for trophies for the club. Trying to win things as a team is much bigger than picking up individual awards, but I’m obviously still very happy about it.”

United boss Ralf Rangnick on David de Gea winning Premier League Player of the Month: “Amazing. I mean it’s more than well deserved. He kept us in quite a few games with fantastic reactions and saves and yeah, as I’ve said, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.” 

Meanwhile, Wolves boss Bruno Lage has picked up the Manager of the Month award for January, following Wolves unbeaten start to the New Year.

Wolves picked up nine points from nine after three straight victories in the month starting with the club's first win at Old Trafford since 1980 when they beat Man United 1-0, before an impressive 3-1 win over Southampton and 2-1 truimph against Brentford.

Their impressive form has seen them jump up to eighth in the table - just four points behind fourth place United while also having a game in hand.

Lage received the award at the club's training ground and all the support staff joined him to collect the award.

He beat Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Norwich City’s Dean Smith to win the award.

“Thank you for this award,” Lage said. “I’m very proud because it was a good month for us. The performance of the team was very good and we achieved three wins in the Premier League with good performances and also with goals.

“I’m very proud to belong to this group of managers who have won this award, but the thing that is even more important than this award was the performance of the team during this month.”

During the month, Wolves also progressed in the FA Cup with a win over Sheffield United to make it a perfect start to 2022.
