Real Madrid Are Crowned Supercopa de Espana Champions.

Real Madrid have emerged champions of the 2021/22 Spanish Super Cup following a 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night.

Both Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao, had beaten Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively in the semi-finals to reach the final.

Goals from Luka Modric in the 36th minute, and Karim Benzema in the 52nd minute, at the Riyadh Stadium in  Saudi Arabia, ensured that the Los Blancos side wins the Super Cup title for the 12th time.

Modric curled in a brilliant strike to give Real a first-half lead at Riyadh's King Fahd International Stadium.

Benzema then made it 2-0 with a penalty after the video assistant referee awarded a spot-kick for handball.

The striker's shot had hit Yeray Alvarez, whose arms were raised as he made the block.

Real were also penalised for a handball late on as Eder Militao was sent off for blocking a shot and Bilbao were awarded a penalty.

However, keeper Thibaut Courtois produced a superb penalty save from Raul Garcia to ensure there was no late comeback for Athletic, who won the trophy last year.

36-year-old Croatia captain, Luka Modric who continues to boss games with ease, was further given the Man of the Match award for his outstanding performance on the night. 

Real Madrid now move to within one of rivals Barcelona's record tally of 13 Super Cup titles.

Speaking to the media after the game, Modric expressed his delight on the victory;

"We are very happy for the title. Of course, we have to celebrate a little because there is still a lot of season left and we have to continue competing to get more... He told RMTV, per Mundo Deportivo.

"I'm always trying to give my best and help the team as much as I can. I'm enjoying football like never before. I've always enjoyed it but now more than ever because you don't know when it can end"

"Playing for Real Madrid is incredible. It is the best club in the world and I am very grateful for everything that is happening to me. I hope that more titles come".

Meanwhile, Real's victory gave Carlo  Ancelotti his first trophy since his return as manager of the club, but a total of five trophies combined which includes: (Copa del Rey in 2013/14, Champions League in 2013/14, Club World Cup in  2013/14, the Uefa Super Cup in 2013/14, and now the Supercoppa de Espana in 2021/22).

The La Liga is the only trophy missing for Ancelotti, and Real Madrid are currently 5 points clear at the top ahead of second place Sevilla.

Real would next be traveling to play Elche in the round-of-16 of the Copa Del Rey, as look to do a domestic treble capturing La Liga, the Super Cup, and the Copa Del Rey. if possible they could win the quadruple as they are still in the Champions League to face PSG in the last-16 next month.

Sitting ninth in La Liga, Athletic Bilbao would also like win a trophy this season despite losing one already, but facing Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey round-of-16 on Thursday will be a tough test.
