Michail Antonio Emerge The Premier League Player Of The Month For August.

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has been voted the Premier League Player of the Month for August.

The 31-year-old was recognised for his outstanding start to the 2021/22 Premier League season, which sees him lead both the goals and assists charts after three round of matches.

 

Antonio was favourite to win the award for a second time, following his triumph in July 2020, and deservedly won it following a truly outstanding August that saw him net four goals and assist three more.

He emerged winner of the award ahead of fellow nominees teammates Saïd Benrahma, Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso, Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier, Everton winger Demarai Gray and Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood to win.

Antonio became West Ham's all-time record Premier League goalscorer and reach 50 top-flight goals for the club.

The Jamaican international scored in all three games so far, netting once in the 4-2 win at Newcastle United, twice in the 4-1 home win over Leicester City and once more in the 2-2 home draw with Crystal Palace.

He has more goal attempts (16) than any other Premier League player, while also playing seven key passes in addition to his three assists.

"It's amazing, to be fair!" Antonio smiled while speaking via the club's website.

"I go out and do my job and to get the gratitude and awards for doing it is amazing.

"August was just another month, you know! To be fair, it's amazing. I saw that I was quite close to becoming the record holder and I've been going for it and now I want to get as far ahead as possible so nobody can catch me!"

Antonio's triumph comes just over a year after he won the Premier League Player of the Month award for the first time, and days after he made his senior international debut for Jamaica.

West Ham next game is away to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.. 

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur manager Nuno Espírito Santo has also won the Premier League manager of the month for August.

The Portuguese has enjoyed a dream start to the Premier League this season winning all of his first three games in charge as Spurs went into the international break top of the table.

Tottenham are yet to concede a goal after beating Premier League champions Manchester City in the first game of the season and defeating Nuno's former club Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford by the same scoreline.  

It is Nuno's fourth Premier League manager of the month awards and his first since he took charge of Spurs in the summer. 

He has now won as many of the awards (4) as José Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino.

Expressing his gratitude, Nuno told the Premier League website;

"It’s a privilege, I’m very thankful,"

"Behind the scenes, with all the work that everybody in the club does, helping the coaching staff and trying to provide the right environment for the players to compete, because this is how we want to work together, push each other, help each other, so it’s a privilege to be here. 

"I always say that it’s down to the hard work of the players. 

"The players have worked really hard in pre-season and that gave us the ability to compete well in the beginning of the season."

Tottenham travel to the Selhurt Park to face Crystal Palace on Saturday.
