Ashleigh Barty Defeats Karolina Pliskova To Claim 2021 Wimbledon Women's Singles Glory.

Australian star Ashleigh Barty, puts up a sensational performance to emerge Champion of the 2021 Wimbledon Women's Single Championship.

Barty wins her first Wimbledon title following a 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 victory over Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova in the women's final at the Centre Court, London on Saturday.

The world No.1 looked like cruising to victory after soaring to a 4-0 lead through the first set, but lost the second in a thrilling tie-break before recovering her composure to win the decider.

It was the first women's Wimbledon final to go to three sets since 2012 when Serena Williams beat Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska.

Barty reached her maiden Wimbledon final by ousting former champion with a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) win over Angelique Kerber in the semi-final, as she went on to clinch her second Grand Slam title having won the French Open in 2019.

Barty is the first Australian woman to win the single's title since her fellow indigenous Australian idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley    claimed the second of her titles at the All England Club in 1980.

The 25-year-old who wore a specially-designed dress in tribute to Cawley's iconic scallop-hemmed dress her idol wore in 1971.

it was the 50 years anniversary since 19-year-old wunderkind Evonne Goolagong claimed the women's title with a shockingly comprehensive defeat of Margaret Court.

Goolagong Cawley was also the last Australian to win the women's singles, in 1980.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also in attendance at the final.

The Duchess met and greeted the ball boys and girls, before presenting the trophy to Ashleigh, and the runners-up trophy to Karolina. This is the second time she would be presenting the trophies.

She would also be present at the Men's Singles Final of the Championship at Wimbledon the all England lawn tennis and croquet club between Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini tomorrow.

She won't be accompanied by the Duke this time around, as he would be at the Wembley stadium to support England when they battle Italy in the Euro 2020 final tomorrow. 

Barty wiped a couple of tears away before climbing up to the player's box after her victory.

"This is incredible," said Barty, the third Australian woman to be crowned Wimbledon singles champion in the Open era (Cawley and Margaret Court (1970) the others).

"I have to start with Kaja (Karolina Pliskova).

"Congratulations on an incredible tournament to you and your team. I love testing myself against you and I'm sure we'll have many many matches."

As for making her idol proud on the day Barty said;

"It took me a long time to verbalise, to dare to dream it and say it," 

"I didn't sleep a lot last night, I was thinking of all the what-ifs. I hope I made Evonne proud."

It was more heartbreak for former world no.1 Karolina Pliskova, who was competing in just her second grand slam final, having lost in three sets to German's Angelique Kerber at the 2016 US Open final.  

She took too long to settle into the match and was made to pay for her early form despite improving in the more competitive second and third sets.

The 29-year-old won the battle of the big-hitters in the second semi-final with a 5-7 6-4 6-4 victory over the second seed Aryna Sabalenka, but failed to win the final battle.

Eighth seed Pliskova who became the fourth Czech woman to appear in a Wimbledon singles final in the Open era, spoke after receiving the runner-up trophy.

"I never cry, never, and now," she said.

"I want to say Ash [Barty] played an incredible tournament, I fought to make it difficult for her but she played very well so congrats to her.

"I want to thank all my team. All the success goes to them, without them I would not be here, and my family of course.

"No matter which trophy I have we have had an incredible two weeks here."
