Thomas Tuchel And Thiago Silva Both Extends Contract With Chelsea

In less than a week following the Champions League triumph in Portugal, Chelsea has exercised an option to extend both Thomas Tuchel's and Thiago Silva’s contract at the club.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, extended his contract by two years, as agreed when he joined the Club.

The 47-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in January after being sacked by Paris-Saint German last December, replacing club legend Frank Lampard as manager on an initial 18-month deal "with the possibility of an extension".

Tuchel since his appointment as Chelsea Boss has been brilliant in building the team’s end-of-season success on an outstanding defence.

His brilliance brought the Chelsea team from sinking ground to higher ground in the just concluded Premier League season finishing in fourth place, and ensuring they qualified for next season's Champions League even before being crowned the competition winners this season.

He also guided the West London club to the FA Cup final where the lost to Leicester City by a single goal in Wembley.

Last Saturday, he became the first manager to reach back-to-back Champions League finals with two different clubs, losing one at PSG to Bayern Munich, and eventually came back to win it at Chelsea against Man City.

Kai Havertz's first-half strike at the Estadio Dragao in Porto handed the Blues their second Champions League crown.

Out of 30 games in charge so far, Tuchel won 19, losing five times, and conceding just 16 goals.

Tuchel speaking On the extension of his contract, told the club's website: "I cannot imagine a better occasion for a contract renewal. I am grateful for the experience and very happy to stay part of the Chelsea family.

"There is far more to come and we are looking forward to our next steps with ambition and much anticipation."

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: "When Thomas joined us in January there was still so much to play for domestically and in Europe. He slotted in seamlessly and immediately became an integral part of the Chelsea family.

"Returning us to the top four in the Premier League was crucial, and we could not be happier with our success in the Champions League which crowned a remarkable season at Chelsea.

"We are obviously extremely pleased therefore to retain Thomas for a further two years, and look forward to more achievements in the coming seasons."

Meanwhile, Thiago Silva’s contract has also been extended by one year, giving him the chance of a second season at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian defender who arrived on a free transfer from PSG last summer, has brought a composed and classy influence in the heart of the club's defence.

He has so far made 34 appearances in all competitions and scored twice.

His new deal will run until the end of the 2021/22 season, as he is set to use his vast experience in helping Chelsea defend their European crown as well as challenge for domestic honours next season. 

The 36-year-old had started the Champions League final game for the Blues, but his time on the pitch in Porto was cut short after suffering an injury. But he was still able to celebrate his first Champions League triumph with the team, having lost that of last season too with PSG against Bayern.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia expressed her delight on Silva's extension: "When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad. 

"Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.

"We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend. We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year."
