CAF Postpones The Draws For The 2022 AFCON Tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced on Sunday, that the draw for the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2022 has been postponed. 

The draws which was due to take place on June 25, has been cancelled by the African football's governing body with no new date set.

Cameroon is set to host the tournament which like other sporting events was cancelled last year due to the global health crisis caused by coronavirus.

CAF said in a statement on their website that the decision was due to "logistical reasons related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“At the request of CAF, the Cameroon Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has agreed to postpone the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 final draw for logistical reasons related to the Covid-19 pandemic,” reads the statement by CAF.

“CAF continues to work together with its partners, the Cameroon government and the LOC with the objective of making theTotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 a successful event and a great celebration of African football.”

23 countries have already qualified for the next year’s showpiece, set to commence January 9 to February 6, 2022, with one more team still yet to qualify between Benin and Sierra Leone after their match was rescheduled for this month.

CAF had also postponed the resumption of World Cup qualifiers last month, which had been scheduled to be played in June until November blaming the Covid-19 pandemic.

The group phase of African qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 tournament is now due to start in September.

Algeria are the reigning champions following their 2019 triumph in Egypt.
