Lille Crowned Ligue 1 CHAMPIONS, Ending PSG Dominance In The League.

Lille secured the League 1 title on Sunday evening following a 2-1 win away to Angers on the final day of the 2020/21 season. 

The French club held their nerve to claim a first Ligue 1 title for the first time in 10-years with top goalscorer Burak Yilmaz on target, as they claimed a narrow away victory to finish one point ahead of Paris St-Germain and clinch their fourth Ligue 1 title in history.

Jonathan David netted an early goal in the 10th minute, and Burak Yılmaz doubled Lille's lead from the spot on the stroke of half-time.

Angelo Fulgini pulled one back for Angers in injury time, but Lille's victory rarely looked in doubt at the Raymond Kopa.

Christophe Galtier’s men who were one point ahead of fierce rivals PSG before the final day fixtures, knew that a victory on the road would ensure PSG result away to Brest was insignificant as they settle for second after 8 defeats, 26 wins, and 4 draws throughout the 38 games in the domestic campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino's watched his side end their streak of 3 titles inba row, failing to win the title for only the second time in nine years.

Lille last lifted the title in 2010/11, with a squad that included Eden Hazard and Gervinho making it their first league crown in 57 years.

This season, Lille used just 21 players to claim their fourth title, fewer than any other side in the division, and the fourth-youngest squad in Ligue 1.

Their squad cost just €140m, more than that of PSG which cost €640m.

One of the older players is Portuguese and former Southampton defender José Fonte, who was brought to the club three years ago to help guide the talented youngsters that are being discovered by the Lille's scouting department.

Manager Galtier was appointed manager of the side in December 2017, taking over from Marcelo Bielsa with the club in serious relegation danger.

Galtier kept them up by a single point in 2018, then took Lille to second and fourth-place finishes over the next two seasons, guided the club to the knock-out stages of the Europa League, he was named the Ligue 1's manager of the year on Sunday for an unprecedented third time.

Meanwhile, at other match centres on the final day, Monaco drew 0-0 with Lens, and finished in third, taking the final Champions League spot after Lyon lost 3-2 at home to Nice.

Fourth-placed  Lyon, will be in next season's Europa League while Marseille and Rennes qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Nantes are set for a relegation play-off with Toulouse in four days' time after losing 2-1 at home to Montpellier.

Elsewhere, Dijon won away to Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux also tasted victory at Reims while Strasbourg and Lorient played out a 1-1 draw, as did Metz and Marseille.
