BREAKING: Jose Mourinho Appointed As New Roma Manager From Next Season.

Italian club AS Roma has appionted Jose Mourinho as the new manager of the club.

He signed a three-year deal until June 2024 set to begin at the start of next season.

The announcement of his appointment by Roma came on Tuesday afternoon, just hours after the club confirmed that current boss Paulo Fonseca would depart the club at the end of the current campaign.

Mourinho has only been out of work for some weeks after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur last month as reported by CloudNine Sports.

He spent just 17 months in North London, leaving the Premier League club in seventh place and also taking them to the League cup final.

It will be the Portuguese manager's second spell in Serie A, after he spent two seasons between 2008-2010 with Inter Milan before leaving to join Real Madrid in 2010.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Mourinho won the league title back-to-back for Inter, as well as the historic treble in 2010, which includes the Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia.

Speaking via the club's website, Mourinho said: 

“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.

"The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.

“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision,” said the 58-year-old manager.

“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”

Roma have been on a very poor run of form which led to Fonseca's exit. They haven't won a game in their last six matches, including the 6-2 trashing at Old Trafford last Thursday despite having led United 2-1 at the break.

Fonseca will still take charge of Roma for the second leg against United this week at the Italian capital Rome. 

Roma will need to score at least four unreplied goals if they are to have any chance of reaching the final set for Wednesday, 26 May in Gdansk Poland.

Meanwhile, they suffered another defeat at the weekend as they lost 2-0 at Sampdoria, leaving them in seventh place in the league standings with 55 points, that's nine points behind sixth place Lazio, and fourteen points behind fourth place AC Milan with four games remaining to end the season.
