Manchester City emerge champions of the 2020/21 Carabao Cup, making it a in a fourth time in a row they would be winning the competition.

The final which went down at the Wembley stadium between Man City and Tottenham on Sunday evening, saw 8000 fans return to the stadium after 14 months of empty stadiums due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Aymeric Laporte was the unlikely hero as Man City defeated a resilient Spurs side to lift the Carabao Cup. 

The City defender Laporte was fortunate to be only yellow carded for one of two cynical fouls, as Tottenham kept it compact and tried to hit their opponents on the break.

Laporte eventually broke the deadlock as he scored the only goal of the game from Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick delivery in the 82nd minute.

The defeat for Spurs, ended their dream of winning a first trophy since 2008 when they last won the competition under Spanish manager Juande Ramos following a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

This would be the second game in charge under the newly 29-year-old interim manager, Ryan Mason after the sack of Jose Mourinho last Monday which made the club’s Supporters’ demand the removal of the board partly for the crime of wanting to join the breakaway Super League.

Meanwhile, the triumph for the Cityzens sees manager Pep Guardiola claim his ninth trophy for the club since his appointment in July 2016 replacing former manager Manuel Pellegrini at the hot-seat.

The 50-year-old Spaniard has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two Community Shields and now four League Cup titles. 

He has lost just one League Cup final against Manchester United in the 2016-17 season, which was his first season at the club. Since then he has won it every single season, equalling the most successive run of Liverpool in the early 1980s.

It was also Guardiola 30th trophies as a manager since becoming Barcelona Mana in July 2008.

The winger, who has been in and out of the starting XI in recent weeks, was one of City’s most impressive performers as Aymeric Laporte scored the only goal of the game to seal a fourth consecutive League Cup triumph at Wembley Stadium.

“Amazing [performance],” Guardiola said at his post-match press conference.

“We showed the opponent we came here to win the game in the first actions.

“We have no doubts of that, the mentality is great, we trained well and put up an incredible performance.

“All the players were brilliant... He added hailing all his players brilliant performance in the final.

“We were out to play and play with an incredible level and quality. I am so delighted for the guys and have a thought for those who couldn’t play.

"We beat Arsenal and [Manchester] United away and Spurs to win it.

“It was more than deserved. It was a good night to share with our people.”

The City boss also paid tribute to the 2,000 City supporters amongst the 8,000 fans backing his players;

“We missed them,” he said. “All the clubs.

“It wasn’t full but they represented all the people. To share it with them, it sounds better. They made some good noise so it’s better of course.

“The reason why we do that is for them.”

Fernandinho who captained City on the day lifted the cup for a remarkable sixth time, with City seemingly having the 2020-21 Premier League title in the bag, the attention will now turn to their Champions League semi‑final first leg at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
