Cristiano Ronaldo Crowned The Serie A Player Of The Year 2020.
Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has been named Serie A's Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season, held at the Gran Gala del Calcio on Friday.
Ronaldo who joined the Bianconeri's in July 2018 from Real Madrid, emmerged winner of the award, which is voted by the Italian Footballers' Association, having helped Juventus to secure a ninth consecutive Serie A title last season, scoring 31 league goals in 33 appearances.
He had also won the inaugural award for the Serie A most valuable player the previous season.
Despite it being a season interrupted by the pandemic (coronavirus), Ronaldo said it was a strange and positive year for him, and it took a lot of adapting to... He told Sky Sport Italia.
"It was a strange year, a year that no one would have wanted, but on a personal and team level, it was positive, because we won the championship,”
"At the beginning, it was difficult to play in empty stadiums, but our goal was to win the championship and we did it. We missed the Champions League but that's how football is."
The five-time Ballon d'or winner also went on to appreciate his fellow players, coaches and officials who nominated him for the award.
"Thanks to the players who voted for me, I feel very lucky,” continued the 36-year-old. "I think the trust, the endurance and passion are the secret to enjoying football.
"I feel motivated and these elements must coexist, otherwise it’s not possible to play at this level when you are 34, 35, 36 or 40".
Ronaldo's sensational strike against Sampdoria in December 2019 was also voted as the Goal of the Season.
"It was my best goal, I’m very sure of it," Ronaldo added. "I want to thank my team mates, because without them it wouldn’t have been possible to receive this prize".
Juventus under manager Andrea Pirlo are currently in third in the Serie A table with 55 points, a point behind AC Milan who are second, and face an uphill task to defend the title this season, trailing league leaders Inter Milan by 10 points.
They might also be missing out on winning a trophy this season, after crashing out of the Champions League on away goal rule by Portuguese side FC Porto.
Their next game is on Sunday at home to Benevento in the Serie A.
