OFFICIAL: Napoli Renames Stadium In Honour Of Diego Armando Maradona.

Napoli stadium has officially been renamed as the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. 

The Naples city council confirmed on Friday, that the stadium which was formerly known as the Stadio San Paolo, has now been renamed in memory of the great Argentine legend who died on November 25, aged 60.

“The decree was signed by the entire city council,” the city government said in a statement.

Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, had played for the Italian club during his seven-year spell between 1984 and 1991 following a world record transfer fee of £6.9 million ($10.48 million) from Spanish club Barcelona. 

He was welcomed by 75,000 fans at his presentation at the Stadio San Paolo, as he went on to win the club's only two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990, along with the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup, which made Napoli retire the number 10 jersey afterwards.

The former Sevilla, Boca Juniors and Newell's Old Boys forward, who is now highly missed by football fans across the world, would be largely remembered for his exploits on the international stage, as he led Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986, scoring 34 goals in 91 appearances for his country.

Apart from renaming the stadium, Maradona had received alot of eternal and unconditional love from the entire city, with the Napoli team paying tribute to the late legend in their last two home games. 

The players wore his number ten for a minute’s silence in a Europa League game against Croatian club Rijeka which they won 2-0. In their 4-0 victory against Roma in the Serie A on Sunday, the team played in a jersey reminiscent of the Argentine colours, designed in honour of Maradona's glorious achievement for the club.

Napoli’s next home game will be next Thursday in the Europa League against Spanish club side Real Sociedad.
