Bayern Munich Wins The German Super Cup, Making It A Fifth Trophy In 2020.

FC Bayern Munich have won the German Super Cup, following a well fought 3-2 victory over rivals Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night, and rounding off the quintuple in 2020.

The match which was played at the Allianz Arena behind closed doors, saw a late Joshua Kimmich goal sealed the 3-2 win.

Bayern who have already won an eighth-straight Bundesliga title, the DFB Pokal, Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup this year, built a 2-0 lead with first-half goals by Corentin Tolissoin the 18th minute, and captain Thomas Mueller goal in the 32nd minute.

Dortmund battled back, as Bayern let the two goal lead slip away just before the half-time break with a goal from Julian Brandt in the 39th minute.

It was 2-1 at the break, before Erling Braut Haaland got the equaliser early in the second half in the 55th minute, It was the 20-year-old’s 19th goal in 22 games for Dortmund.

Kimmich’s snatched the winning goal eight minutes from time through a one-two assist from Lewandowski before the full-time whistle was sounded by Bundesliga referee Bibiana Steinhaus '41' which was her last game before retirement, she is also the first female to officiate in one of Europe’s top leagues.

This is the fourth time in five years they have won the Domestic Super Cup.

The victory saw the Bavarians bounce back from a shocking 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim last Sunday which ended their 23-game consecutive winning streak and 32-game unbeaten run since December 2019.

Bayern's manager Hansi Flick told newsmen after the triumph;  "It was not that easy especially in the second half. We led 2-0 but then made our own life difficult," 

“As long as I have known him Kimmich, his mentality is very special. He is well on his way to being one of those players who shape this club,” 

"What counts is that we won the game. Everything else we will need to do better in our next match on Sunday," he added.

It's now 40 games, 36 wins, 130 goals and 5 trophies for Flick who took over in November and he is averaging a trophy every 9 games with the club.

Bayern will be back in action on Sunday, when they entertain Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga, while Dortmund host SC Freiburg on Saturday.
