Bayern Munich Chairman Unhappy With The Cancellation Of This Year Edition Of The Ballon d'Or.

Bayern Munich Football Club chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has asserted that Robert Lewandowski could have won the 2020 Ballon d’Or, and he is unhappy with the decision to cancel this year's edition of the prestigious award.

CloudNine Sports reported last week, that the French Football magazine reached a decision to cancel this year's award due to the global coronavirus pandemic which led to the suspension and cancellation of major European leagues in March.

The Bayern chairman believes the cancellation of this year’s Ballon d’Or was unfair because his body gave him the impression that the Polish striker was up to clinch the award for the first time following a sensational performance this season.

"I believe Robert Lewandowski is playing a fantastic season and he performed maybe the best season in his career," Rummenigge said via the Bayern TV.

"Unfortunately, France Football cancelled the Ballon d'Or, which we are not very happy about.

"In the end, it's not very fair, not just for Bayern but also for Robert Lewandowski, who might have won.

"I believe it's very important that in a season that, except the French league, were performed through to the end of the season, it has to be possible to give the Ballon d'Or to the best footballer in the world.

"Of course, I believe, in those circumstances, Robert would have a good chance to win it for the first time in his career.'

The 31-year-old striker is currently the top goal scorer in the race for the European golden boot award, having scored 34 League goals in 34 appearances, but could be overtaken by Lazio’s striker Ciro Immobile who has leveled his 34 goals and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo who has 31 goals with 2 games left to conclude the Italian Serie A season.

Lewandowski has scored 51 goals across all competitions this season, surpassing last seasons 40 goals tally.

He helped the Hansi Flick's squad win the German Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and are still in competition to win the Champions League this season.

The highest Lewandowski has ever finished in the award ranking is fourth in 2015, which was a year after he joined Bayern from Borussia Dortmund in July 2014.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is the current and highest winner of the award, having won it for the sixth time last year, and Lewandowski coming eighth.

Bayern Munich are set to host Chelsea in the return-leg last-16 clash on Saturday, 8th August, as they a 3-0 lead from the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

They would face the winners between Barcelona and Napoli, should they qualify for the quater-final in Lisbon.
