The Dutch Eredivisie Season Set To Be Terminated, After Government Decision To Extend Lockdown Order Until September 1.
The Dutch Eredivisie season have been thrown into major doubt, after the Netherlands Prime Minister held a press confrence on Tuesday evening to officially extend the lockdown order and banning all public events until September 1, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision by the Prime minister has made the Dutch Football governing body (KNVB) say that the 2019/20 Eredivisie season will unlikely be continued.
It comes in just hours after UEFA released a note confirming they could cancel some domestic leagues, if they don't conclude early.
“Based on the government's decision, the KNVB will consult with Uefa, after which the decision will be taken,” the KNVB statement reads.
“The KNVB has not yet definitively cancelled competitions because of financial difficulties in the football industry due to the corona crisis.”
Despite a strong recommendation given to finish domestic top division and cup competitions, the Eredivisie was hoping on completing the current season, but it's .ow impossible to play matches even behind closed doors, as the Prime Minister feels it's not a good decision to play matches without the fans in attendance.
CloudNine Sports had reported that the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium became the first major European league to have ended the current campaign and crowned Club Brugge champions despite one game left to complete it's season.
Eredivisie clubs are set to meet on Friday to discuss the consequences of the decision, and how to work out a way on wins the league, as both Ajax and AZ Alkmaar are joint top in the league standings with 56 points each from 25 matches, while Feyernoord stays third with 50 points.
