Petr Cech, Cezar Azpilicueta Mourns The Death Of Chelsea Legendary Goalkeeper Peter Bonetti.
Chelsea football club have announced the passing away of former goalkeeper Peter Bonetti on Sunday, who died at the age of 78 after a battle with a long-term illness.
Bonetti was a goalkeeping superstar of the 1960s to 1970s, as he won the League Cup in 1965 and the Uefa Cup in 1971in his time at Chelsea.
He was nicknamed ‘The Cat’ which was coined by his former team-mate Ron Tindall due to his safe handling, superb reflexes and graceful style between the sticks.
Bonetti made his debut for the blues 44-years ago, at a time when the club were fighting to regain their standing in the English football, he became the second in the history of the club’s list of all-time appearances, featuring in 729 games for Chelsea over the course of his 15-years stay at Stamford Bridge.
Only former centre-half and Chelsea captain Ron Harris has played more games for the Blues,
Bonetti held the record for the most clean sheets until former keeper Petr Cech surpassed him in January 2014.
Following the tragic announcement made today via Chelsea's website, former goalkeeper Petr Cech have payed tribute to Bonetti, who is regarded as one of the club's indisputably all-time great players.
"It’s really sad news for everybody involved in Chelsea Football Club,’ said Cech. ‘We send our condolences to his family and all the people who knew him. Peter was an absolute legend for the club on and off the pitch and that’s how he’ll be remembered."
"He actually told me much earlier that he believed I would be the one who surpassed his record and we talked about it a few times over the years," Cech continued.
"When I did it, he sent a really nice message of congratulations and that just showed the personality and the great character he was."
Club captain César Azpilicueta has also sent his condolence via his official Twitter handle; "Rest in peace to a true legend of our club, sending love to Peter's family"...he said.
The former St. Louis Stars, Dundee United goalkeeper, Peter Bonetti was part of the successful 1966 England FIFA World Cup-winning team, as he served as number two keeper behind Gordon Banks, He represented the Three Lions seven times in his career.
