Club Brugge Crowned Champions After The Belgian Pro League Board Annouce Decision To Abandon The Rest Of The 2019/20 Season
The Belgian Pro League Board of directors, has unanimously proposed to abandon the rest of the 2019/20 season due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
It was confirmed earlier today, after the Pro League chiefs met by conference call, and proposed that they will not resume after it was initially suspended last three weeks.
This would see Belgium become the first major European league to officially abandon its current football season.
The Jupiler Pro League which is the top flight of Belgian football, will effectively make use of the most recent standings to declare the final finish.
While the decision to end the Belgian Pro League may seem hasty, CloudNine Sports understands that, Belgium uses a play-off system to crown their champion, but that rule looks more likely to be skipped this season after majority of the clubs had last week called for the season to be scrapped.
As it stands, Club Brugge currently have a comfortable lead in the standings with 70 points, and are set to be crowned champions, as they are 15 points clear above second place team Gent who has 54 points.
Gent will also qualify for the next season Champions League as runners-up, while outcomes of the Belgian Cup final and the relegation and promotion will be finalized and made official on 15 April.
An official statement realeased via the league website reads;
"The current situation, particularly precarious, in which our country finds itself has as a consequence that sport is not and cannot be considered as the first concern, however entertaining and relaxing it may be.
"In this context, it is the responsibility of the Board of Directors to make a recommendation, taking into account public health, the interests of all stakeholders and the wishes of the majority of clubs. to not resume competition.
"The Board of Directors unanimously decided that it was not desirable, whatever the scenario envisaged, to continue the competition after June 30. Taking into account the above elements, the Board of Directors made a unanimous recommendation to not resume the competitions of the 2019-20 season and to accept the current classification of the Jupiler Pro League as classification final, subject to the decisions of the licensing commission."
The 16-division regular league has just one matchweek left to conclude the season, after 29 round of matches.
Season tickets are set to be redistributed as they look forward to scheduling fixtures and plans for the 2020/21 season.
Genk emerged champions of the Pro League the previous season with 52 points, and 2 points above second place team Club Brugge who finished with 50 points.
