Asamoah Gyan Reveals That He Is Still Devasted By That 2010 World Cup Crucial Penalty Miss.

Former captain of the Blackstars of Ghana, Asamoah Gyan has made known the only one incident in football that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

The incident where he missed a very crucial penalty for Ghana at the 2010 Fifa World cup quarter finals match against South American country Uruguay, following a dramatic goal-line hand ball from Luiz Suarez, will never depart from his memory, as it still haunts him till today.

Gyan missed the devastating penalty as it hit the crossbar in the last minute of extra-time, which jeopardized the hopes of Ghana defying expectations of nearly becoming the first Africa nation to reach the sem-finals of the World Cup.

The match finally ended 1-1 after the final whistle, as Ghana who were playing in their first-ever quater-final in history, crashed out of the tournament losing 4-2 in a penalty shootout.

The 34-year-old speaking in an interview with Juliet Vawuh of TV3 Ghana said that, if only he had the chance to take back time, he will make things right but since he cannot he’ll have to leave with it for the rest of his life.

“Till today, any time alone, it still haunts me,” 

“Sometimes I feel like the world should go back again so I can redeem myself, but I know this is something that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

“I accept that because there is nothing I can do about it. I went there to save my country, but I ended up being the villain, which I accept because I know how people feel"... He added

“It was a disaster. It was crazy. I was also calm because I couldn’t sleep the whole night because I was crying the whole night until morning so I was somehow calm because I couldn’t cry anymore."
"All I was telling myself was to get another chance because I knew I could redeem myself even if not football, something else. But even if I don’t, my kids will do it one day."

“Not winning a trophy with the Black Stars also bothers me. Since 2003, I’ve gotten a bronze medal and silver; I want the gold with the national team, which I don’t have, and that is what Iiwant to achieve."

The former Udinese and Sunderland player Asamoah Gyan, decided to take an "indefinite break" from international football due to the unfortunate event in South Africa. 

He announced his return back to the Black Stars team in may 2012, but following several controversies surronding him, Gyan announced his retirement from international football again few weeks to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, but reversed his decision shortly after a discussion with the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo​.

He is currently the all time leading top scorer with 51 goals in 109 caps, since his debut for the national team in 2003.
