2020 Olympic Postponment Will Only Make Nigeria's D'Tigress Team More Stronger... Says Assistant Coach Peter Ahmedu.
Nigeria’s senior women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, assistant coach Peter Ahmedu, believes that the postponement of the 2020 Olympic games, will help the team have more time to become stronger and provide the opportunity to scout for more players more stronger ahead of the next Olympic games.
Two-weeks ago, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games which was expected to begin on 24th July to 9th August, became the biggest sporting event this year to be postponed by a year due to the global coronavirus outbreak.
The Tokyo Olympic games will now be held next year summer from 23rd July to 8th August 2021.
Assistant coach of D'Tigress, Peter Ahmedu speaking in an interview with brila.net on Wednesday said;
"The team would no doubt have hoped to build on it form that saw them through qualifying but that the expansion of time have handed the players and interested players too more time to stake a claim for consideration to the national team."
“We hope that with the expansion of time and date, that will also give us more rooms to have training programs, scout and get more Nigerian players into the team that people haven’t seen before. Whatever issue might be on ground, we should give God the glory, God knows better.”
CloudNine Sports had reported last February, that Nigeria's D'Tigress team led by the foriegn coach Otis Hughley, ended a 16-years wait to secure qualification ticket for the Tokyo Olympic games with a game to spare in a group that has USA, Serbia, Nigeria and Mozambique during the FIBA Olympic games qualifiers tournament.
Meanwhile the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) are currently the only federation in Africa to have 2 teams (men and women) going to Olympics.
