The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games Have Become The Biggest Sporting Event To Be Officially Postponed By A Year Further.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games has become the biggest sporting event this year to be officially postponed by one year until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The president of the International Oympic Committee "Thomas Bach" and Japan's Prime Minister "Shinzo Abe" today arrived at a decision, after the meeting which was held on Sunday by the Executive board of IOC, amid a mounting pressure from athletes and national Olympic committees.
The decision to postpone the event which was to begin 24th July to 9th August this year, was in light of the global coronavirus health crisis, and will now take place in the summer of 2021.
Though the IOC says the Games will still be called the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when it takes place in 2021.
The announcement was made by the Japanese minister in charge of the games, Seiko Hashimoto, following a phone conversation between his country's Prime Minister, and the head of the International Olympic Committee, to finally reach the said agreement.
CloudNine Sports had earlier reported that the Canadian Olympic Committee became the first major country to withdraw from the event, While Australia added more pressure by also pulling out, saying they won't send their athletes to the event. Other national governing body had also called for a postponement.
